An intoxicating and bloodthirsty sequel to the New York Times best-selling The Cruel Prince, nominated for the Cilip Carnegie Medal 2019.
I have heard that for mortals, the feeling of falling in love is very like the feeling of fear.
Jude has tricked Cardan onto the throne, binding him to her for a year and a day. But the new High King does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her, even as his fascination with her remains undimmed.
Meanwhile, a traitor in the court is scheming against her. Jude must fight for her life and the lives of those she loves, all while battling her own complicated feelings for Cardan. Now a year and a day seems like no time at all....

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

"The Folk doubtlessly learned this lesson long ago. They do not need to deceive humans. Humans will deceive themselves."I so wanted to like this book. I didn't really enjoy the first part, that is, The Cruel Prince, but was hoping the second part would change my opinion.Well, it did, to some extent.I still don't really like Jude Duarte. She doesn't seem real. I mean her emotions are all over the place. At times she's so strong and has so much self control, and the next she's as weak as anyone might expect a mortal girl in Faerie to be. Her ideals and values, everything was so contradictory, I found it very difficult to root for her. And if you don't like the protagonist, it becomes difficult to keep reading. 😅Buttttt.... I really loved the whole scheming and strategy making and the cliffhanger at the end of Book 1. So even though I didn't like Jude, I think there's still some hope. Book 2 really brought me around. Here's hoping that Queen of Nothing will be as grand a finale as I expect it to be.😋

captivating and wicked YA fantasy filled with politics and amazing twist and turns.
Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on 24 February 2022Verified Purchase
The Wicked King was an amazing sequel to Cruel Prince, an intriguing YA fantasy that revolved around trying to keep her control over Cardan and fighting the trouble brewing in court.
The story was about deceit, mind games, trust, betrayal, court politics, game of power, secrets, cruelty, and love.
Most of the chapters ended with quote worthy lines.
Plot was more tense, dark and filled with mind games and politics.
First half of the book was a bit steady paced with all political things, managing meeting, ravels and Court of Shadows with attack that kept things spiced up but as Taryn’s wedding neared things became exciting and the second part of the book was just brilliant with so many twists and turns.
Characters were as interesting and complex as first book. There was a good development in Jude and Cardan. I enjoyed reading more about Cardan and also Jude’s parents. Most of the characters were unlikable and I didn’t trust any of them which made plot tense and tight.
The world was great. I enjoyed exploring the undersea and knowing more about how the power of High King actually works and what Cardan can do with it.
There was some progress in romance. Me and @readingtonic2020 both agree that it can’t be love if they don’t trust each other fully but we are curious how it’s going to develope. It’s not normal kind we see in other books.
Overall, Wicked King was brilliant, fascinating, captivating and wicked YA fantasy filled with bloody politics and amazing twist and turns.
I highly recommend this book if you like,
Royal politics and political intrigue
power game
complex characters and plot
cruel and twisted world
enemies-to-lovers arc
Blood-thirsty YA fantasy

Book Title: The Wicked King
Author: Holly Black
Format: Paperback
Book Title: The book title is absolutely appropriate to the story.
Book Cover: The cover is symbolic and understood when you read the story.
My review:
Book 2 in the series and it's already getting so intense! When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.
Ah! I am so shook, I don't even know where to start! I feel so much for Jude and as the book progressed I think I've fallen in love with her all the more. The strength and the endurance she's developed for herself always posing a formidable front is astounding and it makes you forget that she's human! This one particular fight scene which takes place just a day prior to her twin sister's wedding and the after effects it had on Jude literally reminded me of her being a human in the world of fae!
I still maintain that I am absolutely disappointed with her older sister Vivi and her twin Taryn. There is still so much they could do for her! Locke is a great antagonist and his character actually makes me wanna whack him on his head! The s***** tension between Jude and Cardan is off the charts epic and my god, I could feel the scent wafting off the pages.
That end twist! OMG, I definitely did not see it coming! It was so HOT to see Cardan take charge! That d***** that he used was mind blowing even though it pissed me a little on behalf of Jude! As well as the time Jude had to spend in the undersea - *shudders*. Overall, book 2 was spectacular with all the lies, deceit, vio****e, twists and off the charts chemistry!

I have not come across another fantasy fiction that has captured my attention as much as this series. The second book has even more action and drama then the first one. However, my only complaint is that it doesn't really have major events in the entire story, quite like the first book. The entire plot can be divided into exactly four major events and a lot of strategies. So many strategies, vices and counterattacks that it sometimes make me feel that the protagonist is a little overly dramatic. Her mind is a mess no doubt and I do love that about her and her strong fighter personality but really, for a rebellious king maker she does hold the grudges of a petulant fourteen year old. Although, an entertaining book, I sometimes feel that too few activities have been divided across the entire trilogy but I'll have to read the last book to state this for sure.

A great second book in the series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 29 November 2021Verified Purchase
It had been a long time since I read ‘The Cruel Prince’ and although I thought it was good, I didn’t love it but I did want to finish the series. I recently discovered that I had ‘The Wicked King’ and ‘The Queen of Nothing’ already on my Kindle so I jumped back into the story although I did have to Google the original plot and characters from the first book to bring myself back up to speed. Due to the fact that I didn’t love the first book, my expectations were measured when starting this next one in the series but I was hoping for the best.
This book follows on from ‘The Cruel Prince’, where Jude tricks her long-time enemy, Prince Cardan, into becoming the new King of Faerie. Not only that, he has sworn to be under her command for a year and a day. Using her puppet king, we follow Jude as she is able to manipulate Faerie, making it strong and safe for when her little brother Oak is old enough to take the crown. Being a human that can lie becomes really important as Jude navigates family drama, threats to the crown and the constant belittlement from the Fae, who don't realise this puny human is their real leader. All this whilst balancing the love/lust/hate relationship that she and Cardan have.
Although it had been a while since I read the first book in the series, I found myself immediately getting drawn back in, the story is fascinating and for a YA book it’s very political. The characters are great and the world building is excellent. I felt that the pace of the book flowed well and the plot got deeper and deeper. The dynamic between Jude and Cardan is interesting and this means that their scenes together are very enjoyable. Jude is a great heroine because she’s not nice all the time, she does the hard stuff and makes the hard decisions to get the job done.
Black is a great writer and I think it's amazing how deceptive and sly the faerie race is when they can't tell lies. I did think that the underwater scenes dragged a bit and didn’t really capture my attention but overall there were some amazing twists and turns in this book and I enjoyed it so much that I started reading ‘The Queen of Nothing’ as soon as I had finished. That ending was gold.

Maintains everything that made The Cruel Prince enjoyable but ups the stakes and romantic tension
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 16 February 2019Verified Purchase
I was very close to loving the previous instalment in this series, The Cruel Prince, for its writing style, its world-building and its twists and turns. But while I adored the flawed heroine, Jude, the sort-of villain, sort of potential love interest, Cardan, just didn’t quite spark my imagination, even though that’s my absolute favourite character type.
This time around, everything I enjoyed before was present and correct and perhaps improved. The characterisations, world-building and unpredictable plot only deepened. But with Cardan as king and Jude as his nominal advisor and actual power behind the throne, the stakes felt higher and everything felt a bit more mature than when they were all basically scheming schoolkids. And in turn, with more responsibility and more pressure, Cardan became a much more interesting character, simultaneously more likeable and more scary, and the sexual and political tension between him and Jude ramped up accordingly. As a result, the book really came alive for me. It was a compelling read throughout, though I particularly appreciated the two twists in quick succession at the very end.

Jude is going to the extreme limits to keep her family and the world of Faerie safe. Dodging enemies and deadly politics... the worst thing is, she likes it.
This follows on from The Cruel Prince, where Jude tricks her long-time enemy, Prince Cardan, into becoming the new King of Faerie. Not only that, he has sworn to be under her command for a year and a day.
Using her puppet king, Jude is able to manipulate Faerie, making it strong, and making it safe for when her little brother Oak is old enough to take the crown. Being a human that can lie becomes so important, as Jude navigates family drama, threats to the crown, and the constant belittlement from the Fae, who don't realise this puny human is their real leader.
I had glimpsed a few reviews and comments about this book, before I read it (thankfully no spoilers), and I was surprised at all the hate that Jude's twin sister was getting. Yes, Taryn is simpering and annoying. Yes, she had a hand in breaking Jude's heart...
Post book - I hate Taryn.
I also really wanted to hate Cardan in the end. Wanted to, not sure if I can manage it.
There were some great twists in this book that I didn't see coming. I think it's amazing how deceptive and sly this race is, when they can't tell lies.
I don't want to say anything else, because I'm afraid I might spoil it.
I can't wait for the third book!

First off I want to say I absolutely loved this book! I think it was so much better than the first book. There were so many plot twists that I didn’t see coming! I don’t even know what shocked me more. I loved the character growth with both Jude and Cardan and seeing their relationship start to bloom is amazing. I can’t wait to get stuck into the next book and see how this all plays out! I feel the ending was a little disappointing - i thought Jude was smarter than that and that she would of understood what Cardan was saying. But I’m going to give it the benefit of the doubt and see where this goes.

A must-read for lovers of The Cruel Prince
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 21 January 2019Verified Purchase
I just love the world Holly Black has created with these novels. I literally couldn't wait to read this follow up to The Cruel Prince (but had to - for waaayyy to long). I think other people have said enough about the plot. At times, I found it a little too political with plotting and scheming and I felt it lost a little of the tension between Cardan and Jude. However, for the most part it was a fantastic, immersive read. And that ending! Honestly, I don't know how I'm going to wait another year to find out what happens next.
Really, it's testament to any writer when you finish a book and feel quite lost and upset. Three days on, and I'm still missing the characters and the land Holly Black has created. It's magical, gripping and totally page-turning.
