Maxine has wanted to be a writer for as long as she can remember and wrote her first (very short) book about an elf for school when she was ten and won a book token. Best. Prize. Ever.

As years went by, she continued to write, but 'normal' work often got in the way. She has written articles on a variety of subjects, as well as a local history book on Brighton. However, novels are her first love.

She is the best selling author of 'Things Are Looking Up', '#NoFilter', and the Kindle UK top ten read, 'The Christmas Project' among others.

When not wrangling with words, she loves to read, sew and listen to podcasts. Being a fan of tea and cake means she can (should!) also be found out on a walk.

This could be her chance to resume living again. But it's way out of her comfort zone. The story revolves around Lily's fight against her own anxiety and fears.

Definitely enjoyed it. Though some of the scenes were repetitive. Slightly slow but a sweet story!

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, the conversations are so lively and witty. But the predictable story is a huge letdown. The garden and gardener metaphor is miked dry and the ending is abrupt. It doesn't engage enough to keep reading in one sitting. I had to put it away for some relief. I would like to read Maxine's writing with a better story.

The language is good. The storyline is predictable, it does not hold your attentionfor long .... but still you come back to finish it. The build up given to when exactly Lily bring down her defences or who makes the first move is left to the readers imagination.

Really enjoyed this story about Lily whose husband died tragically and she dealt with his loss by cutting herself off from almost everything to prevent being hurt again. Her brother Felix and his family didn’t give up on her and kept visiting regularly.
Isolating yourself doesn’t allow you to move forward, you get stuck in your grief. Then Felix convinced her to let his best friend, Jack, stay in her house until he found somewhere to live. He had lived abroad for years and now newly divorced, he was returning home to live and re-establish his business.
Lily didn’t really want to share her large house with anyone, least of all Jack, on whom she’d had a crush as a teenager. Jack was determined to pay his way but Lily refused to accept money however, eventually they came to an agreement that Jack would sort out her overgrown garden as payment.
The story progressed gently, breaking down barriers and preconceived ideas until the realisation that letting other people into your life is not a bad thing, in fact it can be good.
It was a delightful story, a nice change of pace. I’m looking for some more of this author’s book’s now.

When I started I thought the writing style was so bad I nearly gave up, (descriptions like bi-folding doors made me wonder if the writer was an estate agent) but the story line picked up my interest. Sadly, it didn't get much better. I found the dog was the best character.

I felt like the start of the book had great depth and the characters were interesting, and then I hit a point in the book where all development stopped and things were just rushed. At one point, I actually checked that I hadn't miss a whole chapter accidentally. It was one of the most frustrating things I have read in a long time.
