Summary from my perspective:
One second Sam is there, other he isn’t. Where you went Sam? This wasn’t the plan!
Sam and Julie are meant for each other, destined to meet, destined to be together until the same destiny pulls the tragedy card. Cruel.
Sam is gone, no more to reach out hold hands, to to fight and laugh and go dates with. It’s hollow and dark for Julie. She’s lost, dreams don’t spare her, she blames herself for his death, blames him, she’s angry, frustrated & hidden. She’s losing herself, bit by bit. Feeling hurt and doing the irrational she falls down and then, in hope of getting to talk, she calls.
And Sam picks up, he’s picks up and Calls it their last chance at good bye? A compensation to the unfair? What is this connection and how long will it last? Is it even real?
What to expect:
A dark book, a beautiful book, Young Death, Grief, Car Accident, Racism, Violence, Sexual Harassment, Music ( The lyrics Julie wrote were so beautiful), strong character development, Toxic Friendship, Queer Representation, Bad mental health, Beautiful connections, trauma, books and film talks, Accepting and growing, Keep you tissues because lots of tears.
My point of view:
This book make your heart sting and hurt and will give you scars. It’s beautiful, I kept it together until the end, until epilogue and then I was a real mess.
I loved how diverse this book was, how it dealt with emotions, not only read, I felt them. Every word was piercing my heart. The characters, the diversity, the wide range of topics it covered while dealing with the main focus of handling loss and grief. It’s outstanding. It’ll teach you multiple lessons, loads and loads! Never forgetting, Julie and Sam were gold!
I usually don’t read dark books, I tend to avoid these sides, but the depth such books have can never be ignored! They make you feel something, make you part of them and this book did exactly that.
Within 290 pages, @thedustinthao moved my world. Even if not my preferred genre, this book is going to be close to my heart!

This is the best book it'll always hold a big part in my heart! It's just perfect for someone who's giving up on love and doesn't value love or think that love doesn't exist! For the one who've lost there loved ones. The one who isn't able to move on and somewhere stuck in the past. I wish I could reread this book with the same curiosity when I read it first time was! I wanted Julie to meet Sam like somewhere in the another World

Loved it

This is my first book 2023 and I was a little unsure about this being my first book of the year as it sounded like it was going to leave me completely devastated. It didn't. From the start of this book it had that sadness about it that you could feel in your heart but not enough to make me cry - thankfully. This book is beautifully written the connection between Sam and Julie is beautiful and heartbreaking. To love so fiercely at such a young age and to lose that partner is unimaginable. I really loved the character of Sam even though we didn't get to learn too much about him, I loved his kindness and thoughtfulness. The character of Julie, I found a little self entitled but grief hits everyone in different ways and she had to learn to cope with her grief, which by the end she figured out how to do. Even though this book was sad throughout it didn't really hit me in the feels until the end when it was truly tearjerking.
My biggest gripe about this book was the flashbacks. It was nice to get a bit of Sam and Julie history but they were such short snippets before they changed to the next scene that it felt almost pointless.

Beautiful and heartbreaking

This book is now one of my favourites. It made me cry quite a lot when I saw sam comprehend the fact that he doesn't have a future to look forward to and Julie blocking out everything while not letting go of him. The author portrays their emotions very well and has overall created masterpiece. I wasn't sure about getting You've reached Sam at first but after reading it in one go I definitely recommend it to anyone who is ready to never move on from this book.

Broke me good 🥺

This broke me. I wasn’t even sad for Julie, it was Sam, like my heart just broke with him coming to terms with how he no longer had anything, and the little comments of ‘is anyone asking about me?’😭😭 this took me days to get through because I literally cried every time he spoke. The voicemail at the end ruined me. I literally have no words other than I sobbed for so long over this book 💔😭😭

Cute, but Not for Me

I SO wanted to like this book. But I simply couldn't get on with it.
'You've Reached Sam' by Dustin Thao follows the accounts of Julie before & after her boyfriend, Sam's, tragic death. It delves into the subject of a deep-rooted grief & guilt which is felt by those trying to deal with such a terrible loss of someone they're in love with & plan to spend their lives with. But, because I have not felt that kind of mourning before, I found it really hard to relate to - through no fault of the author; in fact, Thao does a stand-up job at trying to explain the emotions of Julie, I just couldn't feel it as much as I should have done.
Whilst this story wasn't for me (sorry Dustin!), maybe don't write it off & hopefully you'll enjoy it more than I did.
