I am using it for 50MM Prime lens, but it should fit the 70-300 as it is also 58 mm written on the front

Surely. You only need to check the thread size mentioned on your lens. This is very useful filter for avoiding reflection in the water when you click lake or large water body. It can also be used while photographing landscapes for getting beautiful blue sky. Basically it works on contrast.
