Amazon.in Launches First-Of-Its-Kind ‘Silent Delivery Station’ in India
Amazon kick-starts the initiative in Mumbai to transform the lives of deaf delivery associates
Mumbai, January 18, 2017: Aimed at empowering and transforming the lives of people, India’s leading online marketplace, Amazon.in, today announced the launch of a first-of its-kind ‘Silent Delivery Station’ in Mumbai, India. With the launch of this unique delivery station in partnership with Mirakle Couriers, Amazon.in reiterates its commitment to support diverse communities by creating relevant job opportunities for them.
This ‘silent delivery station’ made a small beginning one-and-a-half years ago when Amazon India partnered with Mirakle Couriers, a Service Partner who employs deaf people. The pilot was with 4 hard of hearing associates who worked alongside hearing associates in an Amazon delivery station. Seeing their strong performance, Amazon has now extended the partnership to a dedicated station that is almost completely managed by deaf associates.
These associates deliver packages covering a radius of 2-3 kms from the delivery station by bus or on foot. They are trained on all safety procedures and customer experience behaviors by the team at Mirakle Couriers via sign language. They use the same technology as hearing associates with some modification in processes to ease their delivery experience.
Sharing his views on the launch of the Silent Delivery Station, Mr. Akhil Saxena, Vice President, India Customer Fulfilment, Amazon India said “Our vision is to create opportunities for individuals to realize their potential and transform their lives. We are committed to using our resources and infrastructure of innovation and technology to enable diverse communities succeed. We are proud to have pioneered the ‘Silent Delivery Station’ which is a first-of-its-kind, India-specific innovation from Amazon.”
“The idea was basically to radically change how deaf people and people with disabilities are currently employed in a country like India. By partnering with Amazon.in, we have set an example for many in the country to support the differently-abled people by providing them with relevant opportunities and improve their livelihood.” said Dhruv Lakra, CEO, Mirakle Couriers Pt. Ltd.
The Service Partner program is one of the last mile models by Amazon Logistics in India wherein entrepreneurs act as Amazon.in’s local distribution network providers and create the last mile delivery footprint. Currently, the company has over 350 Service Partner nodes across the country. As part of the Service Partner program, Amazon.in had launched a first-of-its-kind Women only delivery station in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala and the second in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Amazon.in has also partnered with another Service Partner, Head Held High to set-up a dedicated 'rural' ecommerce distribution centre manned by local youth in various parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
