Catherine Moloney is a Liverpool writer of Irish-American heritage. After graduating in Jurisprudence from Jesus College (University of Oxford), she was called to the Bar at Gray's Inn. Despite qualifying as a barrister, her first love was English; this led to a PhD in English Literature at Birkbeck College (University of London).

In her academic career, she lectured and published widely on the subject of tuberculosis and nineteenth-century literature, but somehow managed to avoid contracting galloping hypochondria and turned her attention to crime fiction.

Another excellent thriller in this series. A female body is found in the medical part of a centre and several more follow. So far so usual. On the hunt is our usual quarter of darkly Byronic brooding detective, grubby loyal Falstaffian assistant, rising female acolyte and ginger male plod. Usual classical quotes from the gorgeous one, ditto his psychic sensitivity with the dead but with increasing frequency there are references to past and present celebrities and old and new cinema/telly/paperbacks. Less of the floaty, annoyingly ethereal girlfriend who is becoming increasingly wet but more of the formidable mighty Mrs. Noakes of whom I am becoming increasingly fond. I understand new stories are forecast and I would love one to feature the ballroom dancing Noakes and murder most foul.

In her first few books the author used much English church language and settings. This was very annoying as I know zero about the Church of England and really am not in the least interested in its language and processes.
In this book there is none of this. It is a straight forward whodunnit. The characters have been developed and are more realistic.
What the author has retained in a predilection for using words which are not in everyday use (or month, or year or even decade!) so be prepared to have a dictionary sitting beside you (of course, if you are reading on a Kindle you have the dictionary built in). She has also continued to put in strange quotes which do not appear to have anything to do with the plot.
However, be prepared for a very complex plot with an unexpected ending.

Whodunnit? This book will have you on the edge of your seat while you try to fathom out the way the killers mind worked. DI Markham was also having a hard job in working it all out. Each time he thought he might have cracked it, wham! another murder occurs and his thoughts are taking in another direction. Will they ever catch the killer or killers?
I love the characters in this book: Markham, Noakes, Hart, and Doyle. Not just a team, but considered themselves a family.
Looking forward to reading the next book in line.

Catherine tells a great story about her unusual police duo, DI Gil Markham and DS George Noakes. She also expands the

The storyline was fine, lots of possibilities for the killer. What really let it down for me was the characterisation: more refined senior detective with a rough diamond sidekick, fragile girlfriend etc. Clichéd and a bit two-dimensional. I got this for free so no complaints on that score, that’s for sure! If another free one in the series comes up, I probably would read it.
