This is one of those rare books which are worth their weight in gold. For over a hundred years this little book has been teaching Sanskrit to new learners with guaranteed success. It comprises a three-month course divided into 2 parts of 50 lessons each. Each lesson introduces 10-15 new words and the usage of each word is explained through many simple Sanskrit sentences, whose meaning are also given in simple Hindi. No time or space is wasted in irrelevant details or complex aspects of the language. The book starts off from the very basics - the Sanskrit alphabet. No previous knowledge of Sanskrit is assumed. All you need to know is Hindi as every thing is explained through simple Hindi. Since no English is used either, this is very accessible to Indians, unlike many other online Sanskrit tutorials and books which try to teach Sanskrit through English language. The beauty of the book is that the first part bring in no intimidating aspects of Sanskrit grammar and limits itself only to singular noun declensions. Grammar is introduced only in the second part, by when students who have completed the first part would have a good grounding on Sanskrit to properly appreciate the finer points of Sanskrit grammar. If a student systematically studies the lessons in the order they are given, by the end of 3 months, he/she can expect to speak and write good Sanskrit and be able to read and understand complex Sanskrit texts like the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the Puranas and the Kavyas.
I strongly recommend that you not only buy this book for learning Sanskrit yourself, but also gift it to other deserving persons as birthday gifts, wedding anniversary gifts and gifts for other occasions.
