5.0 out of 5 stars Galloping story and intriguing characters
Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on 3 April 2023
The story, language, and characters transport you back to Regency. This has been one of the most authentic Regency story that I've read, although I'm not an expert on history at all. Each and every character is well thought out. The women in the story are bold, beautiful, thoughtful, and ingenious. The narrative presents a slice of life of the Regency era. It was a fun read and very entertaining.

Looking forward to the next adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read! Thoroughly enjoyed this book.

This book is a joy to read! I had watched "Bridgerton” on Netflix and although I enjoyed it, I was troubled by the obvious inaccuracies of speech and manners. People just didn’t speak like that in those times. But in Jane Dunn's book, everything seems to be carefully researched, including language, historical references and descriptions of all things Regency.

I love her use of language: "The closer he came, the more he was encompassed by a swelling wave of song. Arrested for a moment in the sonorous air, he was free from thought, merely breathing." And "He smiled as he brushed a crumb of toast from his sumptuously accoutered knee" Such beautiful writing.

I was a fan of Georgette Heyer as a girl, (Regency romance novelist extraordinaire) and so The Marriage Season reminds me of Heyer but Dunn adds some modern touches that make it more enjoyable. The two sisters, Sybella and Lucy, are independent women of their time. The warmth that Sybella (a widow whose husband was killed in the war) has for her younger sister and her little boy James (who adds a sense of comedy to the book) is carried throughout the book and I felt invested in the characters.
One is shown how the family has loyal servants, and treats them with the respect they deserve, but the writer sticks to the realities of the day when the aristocracy flourished, and did not treat hired help as depicted in "Downton Abbey" (which was totally unrealistic).
When Lucy falls for the charm and good looks of Lord Ravenell, only to discover he is not as interested in the fair sex as much as he is in his own, we are shown how dangerous this 'proclivity' was during Regency times. And I loved the character of Lady Godley who helps the two sisters achieve their goal of 'coming out' in London, and the depiction of the Duke (Ravenells' father) who echos the Georgian era. But the character I was drawn to the most was Mr Brabazon who initially presents as a mysterious, uncaring brute, only to turn into a Darcy character and surprises everyone! The happy ending (spoiler) of Mr Brabazon and his handsome ward, Lord Lynwood who become the sisters' beaus was just the icing on the cake.

Having grown up near Richmond, I found the description of the horse ride Sybella and Mr Barbazon took from Central London to Richmond Park so interesting. To imagine that Hounslow Heath was such a dangerous place for horse travelers, with thieves and gangs of criminals laying in wait! What it must have been like to travel by horse in those days, staying at Inns and all the complexities of travel at that time. Also the description of the Vauxhall Gardens made me want to have been there with its party atmosphere.

The Marriage Season carries me away to those times of propriety and beautiful dresses, gorgeous scenery and love matches with marvelous horse carriages, male heroics, beautiful language (get your French dictionary out) and romance! I really hope The Marriage Season will be made into a film or TV series.

Looking forward to more from this author!

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming story that captures the time period faithfully.

The skill of the author shines through in the way the setting and characters are presented. There was commendable attention to motives for the behaviours and idiosyncrasies of the people in this charming tale. It is not often historical romances have a widow as a heroine, with a young child. It was easy to fall in love with the Carey sisters who shared such affection for each other and a genuine regard for others. The use of language to suit the era is appreciated and a welcome standout in a sea of romances that muddy the waters with modern expressions and misplaced descriptions.

The flow of the story seemed natural and perfectly timed. The satisfying ending needed no overt sexuality to reach its conclusion.

Jane Dunn is a writer that lovers of authentic historical romance will welcome.

This book almost ruined my life, I could not put it down! I read late into the night then woke up early to read some more. All the characters come to vivd life but I particularly loved the elder sister, Sybella, who's a young widow who thinks her chance of love has passed. (She's wrong!)

I was amazed by how true and realistic it all felt. I live on a country estate and enjoyed so much the horses, the sense of the country and how the bees play such a part. The toddler Jim was enchanting and absolutely believable. I also loved the lively view of Regency London and Lady Godley, who hosts the young sisters and turns into a true Fairy Godmother. The dashing male characters and their friendships and witty talk are delightful. In fact all the language and fascinating detail immersed me in an authentic Regency world that's new to me. I can't wait to enter it again with Jane Dunn's next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely lovely. very well written.

The author displays a much deeper understanding and knowledge of that era as well as knowledge of the topography, flora and fauna and language of that time than many other historical romance writers. She also shows a more than usual in-depth knowledge of the history of the setting where the tale takes place. The characters are interesting and display both depth of feeling and suffer from ordinary human foibles. Additionally the author does not shy away from discussing sex and taboos and the social behaviors and mores of the time, yet totally refrains from any explicit descriptions of such while it is well understood. I love that there is no trite overused impediments keeping the lovers apart other than their own stupidity and no explicit erotic displays yet totally satisfying. I Love that book

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful?

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this offering by Jane Dunn. This is my first read by this author, quite reminiscent of Georgette Heyer. I give it 4 stars, because I felt that the romance between the h and H was rather flat and rushed, I'd have loved to read more of how they gradually came to fall in love. The secondary characters were delightfully engaging, and it would be interesting to see what becomes of poor Val (I hope he can get his own Lucie and give his father, the Duke, what he really longs for).

If you enjoy reading a book that transports you to another time, location, language, customs, music, and dress … try this story. The beautiful descriptions are captivating. The characters have lessons to learn about themselves and love. And yes, a lovely romance exists without trashy sex scenes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best, most accurate Regency novel I have found! (besides G. Heyer’s work)

Wow, just wow! From the language accuracy (I guess, I’m no expert but it sounded pretty impressive ) to the deep development of the characters and their relationships and conversations, I completely fell in with this story and author!!

It also dealt with some pretty heavy themes with aplomb.

I had to use the dictionary more in this book than any other novel I’ve read. And even then because of all the period language and French I still missed some comprehension, but it didn’t lessen my enjoyment in the least.

Absolutely loved all the characters, especially sweet little James! He was so cute and precocious!!

Can’t wait for more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful authentic revelation to the historical world in which Byron inhabited

I especially liked the language that Jane used, some of which I had never heard. The environment her characters inhabited are so wonderfully described and real and was such that, as the reader, you felt yourself to be there along side them. I was sad to have come to the end of the book, to lose contact with those I had come to know and love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Regency Romance debut

I enjoyed this book from start to finish. And, to be honest, the cover illustration really drew me in. But what kept me entranced and engaged were the characters. Though this is a story that focuses on people in the aristocratic class in early 1800s England, they are drawn in wholly human frames. And the author's obvious research into the slang words used during that time adds special spice to the characters' dialogue.
