His whole life has been mapped out for him. Carlos Portillo has always led a privileged and sheltered life. A dual citizen of Mexico and the United States, he lives in Mexico City with his wealthy family, where he attends an elite international school. Always a rule follower and a parent pleaser, Carlos is more than happy to tread the well-worn path in front of him. He has always loved food and cooking, but his parents see it as just a hobby.
When his older brother, Felix - who has dropped out of college to live a life of travel - is tragically killed, Carlos begins hearing his brother's voice, giving him advice and pushing him to rebel against his father's plan for him. Worrying about his mental health but knowing the voice is right, Carlos runs away to the United States and manages to secure a job with his favorite celebrity chef. As he works to improve his skills in the kitchen and pursue his dream, he begins to fall for his boss's daughter - a fact that could end his career before it begins. Finally living for himself, Carlos must decide what's most important to him and where his true path really lies.

Here is what I loved about NoH: the deep, clear and consistent portrayal of what it means to cope with grief, the reflective nature of the protagonist, the lovely characterization of the love interest, the hero journey-like character types (the mentor, the nemesis, the best friend), the realistic depiction of a restaurant kitchen, the very thoughtful and character driven plot, and the satisfying resolution that didn't simplify a life lived carrying loss.
Here's what I struggled with in the book: the slow pacing at times, some details that seemed a bit incorrect considering the setting (and that I live where the book is set), and connecting to the protagonist.
Even though this wasn't my favorite of his books, I'm still glad I read it. Adi is one of my favorite authors, and among a small group of whose work I will read no matter what. I can't wait to read his next novel.

Carlos's voice is sweet, relatable, and hilarious, and his ongoing relationship with his dead brother is very well-handled -- funny and moving. Alsaid's descriptions of setting (and food) are particularly lush and fresh. Like the best descriptions, they put you deeper into the story rather than taking you out of it. The author's own love of food and nature comes through on every page. On a personal level, this book made me miss living in Mexico -- and also want to move immediately to the San Juan Islands!
NORTH OF HAPPY did a definite number on my heart, squeezing it, expanding it, and leaving it full at the end. I can't ask for more in a book!

I really liked Carlos and felt his loss and his loves. I had a hard time liking Chef and Emma. However, I am happy with the ending.
