4.0 out of 5 stars One of the better YA books
By Nikita Poddar on 6 February 2019
'But if the blood
inside you is on the inside
of someone else,

you never want to
see it on the outside of
them'

Long way down is a book written in free verse & the story of a 15 year old African- American boy named Will whose brother, Shawn was recently killed & he belonging to a community with 'rules' (1. No crying 2. No snitching 3. Get revenge) decides to murder the suspect with the help of his brother's gun. The setting of the story is in an elevator and spans over 60 seconds. Mysterious guests appear at each Floor. They all have one thing in common and Will has to make a tough decision.
The theme of the book revolves around gun violence which is rampant all over the world but especially in the US. As per a report by @bbcnews dated 27 Oct, 18, around 40% of Americans own a gun (sidenote- we're talking about a country with over 300 million population so that roughly amounts to over 120 mn; and these are just figures for the US with Yemen, Switzerland and Finland not falling behind). However, let's overlook the mass shootings centered around racism and religion for a while because this book focuses on young homicide victims (85% of which are victims of gun violence) and so if we look closely at the cause we are left with explanations like poverty, gap in education and failure to amend the gun laws. Getting back to the book, the author vividly points out how the death toll is always on a rise 'cause the 'rules' (which have been communicated to each generation) turns into a vicious cycle of revenge such that young minds are unable to make right decisions and resort to violent means to avenge their dead family members.

The verse style writing breathes life into the story. There's a sense of eerieness lurking behind the spaces between the words and their arrangement. It captures your attention and makes the story disturbingly real. Page turner and unputdownable, I read it in one sitting last Sunday evening.
Do I recommend? Yes. It highlights an important issue. Quick read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A full 5/5 for both the book and the story.
By Sumaiya Khatoon on 9 July 2019
Book was delivered on time and in good condition.. This book is written in verse which is a first for me .. and I ended up loving this style of storytelling.. also, the illustrations were beautiful..

The story follows a guy who is out to get revenge on his brother's killer. Armed with a gun, he gets into the elevator of the building to fulfill his mission. But at each floor, the elevator stops and he encounters (dead) people from his past who play a significant role in potentially changing his perspective.

Since it is written in verse, it was a quick and easy read. The writing was beautiful and the story was haunting and intriguing.

The ending which is open for interpretation was the best part of the book.
