4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant pastime not only for kids!

This book series caught my attention because of the Netflix series with Neil Patrick Harris. And as I usually like reading the original books before watching a movie / series, I gave this one a try.

It is quite entertaining and very easy and fast to read. I really enjoy the lecture especially after a long and stressful working day (so far I have read books 1 - 6). This book series is just something you can switch your head off and can read it through without the need to concentrate too much. The way Lemony Snicket writes is very easy to follow and just makes you keep reading, even though the events in the book are predictable.
Also the illustrations by beginning of every chapter in the Kindle version are a welcome change!
The only thing I do not like is the patronising way to explain 'difficult' words - of course those stories were written for children but even then I don't think that that much explanation is actually needed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beatrice! Beatrice!! Beatrice!!!
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on 25 February 2001

Not the strongest of his volumes so far. But it adds to the mystery of the Books dedications. So far we know the following: 1) Beatrice, the author's "darling' is dead. 2)Beatrice asked too late, "Where is Count Olaf"? 3) His friend, Professor Reed, painted a triptych titled "What Happened to Beatrice". On one panel is a fire, on the second panel is a typewriter, on the third is "the face of a beautiful, intelligent woman." 4)A man - "not, alas, me" - is lucky enough to marry his beloved Beatrice and live with her in happiness over the course of her short life. 5)At the Duchess of Winnipeg's' masked ball, he is pursued by palace guards. He approaches a woman he had been forbidden to approach for the rest of his life. She is alone on the Veranda. He gives her the message he had been trying to give her for fifteen long and lonely years: "Beatrice," he cries, just as the Palace guards spot him; "Count Olaf is .........." He cannot go on. AND,6)Esme wants to steal from the Baudelaire orphans "the way Beatrice stole from me."
So, if I am not too nervous, I shall wait anxiously for the next volume to continue to enlighten the various levels of mysteries contained herein.....

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark but amusing and clever
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on 31 December 2012

My 8 year old and I are enjoying this series. They are dark but in an amusing way. It's hard to say why they are appealing but they are. The three children are resourceful and with ingenuity figure out how to escape the evil Count Olaf on their own. A few of the grown ups are well meaning and kind but they are mostly ineffectual, inefficient and useless. I guess what we like is the fact that the kids are clever and solve their problems with little help from grown ups. They may try some tactic that doesn't work so they try something else. Each child has their own speciality and different situations call for different tactics. They work well as a team, sharing the hardships and responsibilities.

The author does some interesting things like using big words and stopping to give the definition. Sometimes the definition is slightly skewed toward fitting the story and even that makes it amusing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Elevator Mystery

The poor children, to come so close and yet be so far from what they want...

The Ersatz Elevator sees them living with Esme and Jerome Squalor in a penthouse on the top floor of a magnificent apartment building. Of course, Count Olaf shows up as he always does and of course he doesn't get away with his dasterly plan to kidnap the Baudelaire children, but he does get away and that of course leads us to book seven.

4.0 out of 5 stars good but not excellent

this book is the longest so far in this series. however it is not the mosf intersting and I think the previous books are much better. That dosent mean you can skip this one though because it is around halfway througb the series and holds key information and characters.
