5.0 out of 5 starsWonderful!
Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on 10 June 2018
The Duke of Ashbury is a scarred war hero. Emma Gladstone is a seamstress. She lands on his doorstep to claim money for a wedding she made for his ex-fiancee. The Duke is impressed by Emma's pluck and wit. Also that she didn't want to puke upon looking at his disfigured body. Sparks fly. The Duke ends up offering marriage to her with certain conditions.
1. It is a marriage of convenience.
2. They will have sex with no lights and no kidding.
3. When Emma gets pregnant, she will have her own house in the country to raise the child.
Emma begs to differ.
1. They will have dinner together every night.
2. They will have conversation.
3. There WILL be kissing.
The whole book is strewn with their carnal activities but it never goes overboard or sleazy. The chemistry between the two is clearly perceived and their fallible in love, a given. I loved the humor between the two protagonists. Usually the heroine, at some point feels scared of the hero, but not this one. Thank God. She gives as good as she gets which I liked. No simpering, no kow- towing, no nervous twisting of the hands.
I liked this book and would definitely recommend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars SILLY, ANNOYING, RIDICULOUS, ANACHRONISTIC and BORING !!!!
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 17 September 2017

I read the free introductory sample of this book, and it hooked me, so I bought the rest of the book. But unfortunately it was all down hill from there! While I don't expect romance novels to be massively realistic, this one was utterly ridiculous.

It starts out with a feisty heroine meeting a scarred Duke, he proposes, she declines. Spoilers ahead: She changes her mind and marries the Duke. So that she can rescue a pregnant single acquaintance of hers. She has extensive knowledge about birth control methods, which she explains to this pregnant friend (excuse me, but in this time period, gently bred young ladies did not have detailed knowledge of birth control methods. Only prostitutes did).

The heroine doesn't bother to tell the Duke that she is not a virgin, and he doesn't even notice. She eventually tells him, and he doesn't mind at all. Now while this may be nice in theory, I think for that time period, it is ridiculously anachronistic. At that time, it would have been very shameful, and he probably would have been angry about it or at least angry that she didn't tell him. The Duke runs around at night fighting crime and acting as a night time vigilante! Really! How ridiculous! The Duke shows up at a formal ball without a jacket and with his chest exposed, and then proceeds to dance a walz! Really !! How ridiculous! In fact the entire book is ridiculous, and filled with anachronisms. The entire book becomes a failed attempt to be "cute" (i.e. the heroine's angry kitten, the pet names, the spinster girlfriends, the Muslim butler who becomes their child's godfather?? A duke would never make a servant godparent to his child! IT'S ABSURD !!!).

I feel like I'm reading a very silly, 21st Century YA (young adult) book, or American sitcom, not a story set in regency England!

As I kept reading, I got massively annoyed with the whole thing. And finally, in addition to being annoying and ridiculous, the story was actually quite boring. I requested a refund from Amazon. Don't waste your time or money on this rubbish.

1.0 out of 5 stars No historical accuracy and filled with anachronisms

This is a totally silly book -- the story is filled with so many historical inaccuracies and crazy mistakes that it is almost impossible to ignore. The staff talk to the duke and duchess like modern day democratic equals, the duke goes shirtless at a ball (???), the duke married a seamstress (seriously this was not on back then,) the duke fought in the wars?? NO as the oldest son in 1815 he would NOT have been fighting at Waterloo, and these are just a few of the totally unbelievable aspects; there are more! The dialogue between H/h is totally modern with absolutely no effort to make it Regency England appropriate: people did not use the colloquialism "Really?" and other such 21st century expressions. In fact for a while I was confused by the language and wondered if in fact it was a more modern era.
I've only listed some of the more egregious things but seriously this is a totally ridiculous story and it wasn't even that interesting. There was lots of sex (not something I have a problem with) but it all felt like filler rather than a way to move the plot forward. If you are looking for a real Regency historical romance I'd go with Meredith Duran or others and give this book a miss!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing romance

Don't normally write negative reviews but this novel gets such praise that I felt obliged to reset the balance a little. The issue was the complete lack of historical accuracy in either the dialog or events. Plus, the two leads entered into a physical relationship with virtually no preamble and the text descended into lacklustre descriptions of their intercourse.

1.0 out of 5 stars It's interesting to me to see what other readers consider to be good writing.

Wow! Well, the one thing I give this author is her ability for funny, witty banter between the h & h in this story. Beyond that … not much. Let me just say that if you enjoy reading mindless explicit sex between the two bizarre main characters, and a plot that seemed to be going nowhere, then you'll love this!! Although I managed to get as far as 30% in because I couldn't make myself continue. I found It plain silly. This read has all the ingredients that make up a predictable, smutty “dime novel” read; keeping its usual reading audience happy. Sex sells on!!!

That's why I always read "free" reads in this particular genre- unless, of course, I know of the author. My bad!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Very silly

This author needs to decide if she wants to write stories or be a stand up comedian. Some humour in a story is always welcome but every single line uttered ! I felt like I was reading the script to a a naff American sitcom. Just because a carriage is mentioned occasionally does not give a feel for the regency period, when every action and word shouted 21st century! I gave up after a third of the book as I was bored with all the silliness and would just have liked a story. My advice would be write comedy scripts or go on the stage, but please leave the historical romances to the experts.

I am surprised that the author is an American as the writing seems more modern day Dagenham, rather than either New York or Mayfair.
This Beauty and the Beast story though is pure Disney.

1.0 out of 5 stars Silly modern “romance”
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 30 November 2018

If there was a zero star that would have been my rating. I like the regency period and the reviews were positive so I downloaded the book to my kindle. This book is complete twaddle. A ridiculously plotted, silly modern “romance” with boring and stereotypical descriptions of attraction and sex. Perhaps the book is based on fairy stories like beauty and the beast. If you want to read a novel based in the regency period then this isnt for you - similarly if you like intelligent plotting or an engaging set of characters, dont buy this tedious book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dumbest romance ever

Unbelievably stupid. Even with the scars he has being a duke and a rich one at that he could have married ANY lady. Going for a seamstress = many eyerolls. The initial letter that Penelope wrote with the little P.S. We’re not like other ladies (or something like that) also had me rolling my eyes. Geez, at least make it seem like a period piece. It’s not just about the humping.

Extremely disappointed. I’ll stick with Lisa Kleypas, Judith McNaught, Julie Garwood, and Julia Quinn.
