I believe this is the fourth in de Paola's Strega Nona series, and this time the clueless Big Anthony, looking more than ever like a scarecrow or one of the Flowerpot Men is harassed by the approach of Christmas.
This is again beautifully illustrated, mostly done in pinks, yellows and mauves, set in an arcaded southern Italian town, and this time the story is just a bit more sentimental - perhaps appropriate for Xmas. Big Anthony is a hulking dunce, but surprises everyone at the end.
Great addition to the Strega Nona series. My four-and-a-half-year-old son loves Strega Nona. Nice way to teach a little bit about Italian culture, and demonstrates respect and value for older people. A very charming book.
We always love Strega Nona in our house and this one does not disappoint. The only downside is I find my kids requesting it in the middle of summer. I always value that Mr. dePaola weaves together Catholicism into all of his stories. May God bless him with many more good works.
A must-read and a classic keepsake, perfect for Christmas, it teaches some nice lessons too. I chose it among a few other books to add to my family Christmas book collection: The Magical World of Strega Nona (also from Amazon), A child's Christmas in Wales (by Dylan Thomas, with lovely, classic illustrations), A Box of Delights (John Masefield).
My grandkids love this book. When I read it to them, I was thrilled to see so many references to the Italian Christmas customs that I grew up with. I had fun explaining them to the kiddos. Nice illustrations too.
My 6yo wants this read out loud almost every evening between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s such a great model of how pitching in is important - and whining is frowned upon - all through the lens of the beloved Strega Nona cast of characters.
