I used to read Mr. Paulsen's stories to my sons when they were young. We started with Hatchet and it led to a wonderful and much cherished time I spent with them. It is many years later and I myself have continued to read his stories! I have read every single one he's published. I know his books are intended for young readers, but I find them delightful and easy to read. Every one is like a journey and I am sad when they come to an end. Now, as a widowed empty nester, I find Gary Paulsen stories like old friends.
I enjoyed this book, but it ended too abruptly. I have been many things-son, brother, lover, soldier, husband, father and Sergeant. My new “role” is Grandpa which has been fun so far. Some “roles” were joyous and some were not. This is a good recounting that ends too abruptly.
I loved this book. Anyone who enjoyed reading one of his many books would find this book so inspiring. His early life was very difficult, filled with experiences no child should ever have. I highly recommend this book.
