The quality of paper in my opinion was a bit low, but the content more than makes up for it. The book have several lovely short stores that emphasize the importance of good manners and good habits. The stories are structured so that it makes it easy for children to understand and relate to with actions and consequences well laid out. There is a lot going on in this book and a lot of nice pictures for children to look at. My child loves it.
I got this for my 2.5 year old girl and she likes it. Its not her favorite but she enjoys it from time to time. The characters are unforgettable. Huckle, Lowly, pig will and pig wont are really cute. There are around 7 or 8 stories in this book. I think a few sentences in the book could have been written a little better. Overall its a nice book
Scarry as ever has written a book full of captivating characters that kids will love. It's a small skinny paperback that is intended as a manners instruction book for the very young. As such, although each desired behaviour is made into a story, the characters do come across as slightly too 'goody-goody ' and the tone is a little self-righteous and patronising, and at times startlingly unrealistic, even for the '60s. "Huckle and Lowly put their pyjamas away neatly. They chew their food slowly and quietly." Yeah right! What planet are they on?! It seems a little too heavy on instruction and a bit lacking in the simple entertainment value that Scarry is so famous for. However, my little boy likes it well enough and it helps that many of the the characters including Huckle, Lowly, Pig Will and Pig Won't, Sergeant Murphy etc are on TV.
Brilliant little book. I bought this many years ago for my two children, and was very pleased to find it again for my youngest grandchild. She is too young to appreciate it yet as she is only 7 weeks old, but couldn't resist buying when I found it. The book we had was softbacked but this is a hardbacked version, so should last longer. My kids loved hearing these stories, and later, reading them for themselves. It instills good manners in young children in a fun way. Can't wait to read it to her. Lowly worm here we come!
