I bought it for my 5 year old daughter. This content and size of the book is at the same level of say 'Biscuit goes to school'. There are few words like 'First' which don't follow the standard phonics of the letters and can be difficult for young readers. Though children can relate to it at some level, I found that the story line and word introduction of "Biscuit goes to school' better and that book is price at Rs 140 and this is at Rs 484. I found the best book in terms of story line, illustrations, words used to be "Elephant and Piggie" series by Mo willems, though at Rs 395(through Amazon, though the sticker PRIPHL on the book labels it at Rs350) it is not cheap nor costly. But it is worth the price. I have the "watch me throw the ball" and "I will surprise my friend" in the elephant and piggie series.
Could be that my grandson loves to cook with grandma or it could be the whimsical illustrations. Could be the story itself. Could be all of these things. My 3 year old grandson absolutely loves the book and asks to have it read multiple times a day.
I really like these Penguin Young Readers. I open up a lot of the "Level 1" books, and I'm scratching my head, going, this is Level 1??? It seems like most comparable series contain lots of big words, and so many words per page that my son gets mentally exhausted after just a few pages. And somehow the story is still terrible!
But these Penguin Young Readers are what I think of as a TRUE Level 1, for the kid who is just putting everything together and starting to read. It's such a great feeling for my little man to be able to read the whole book himself. And I've got to hand it to the author- they did a fantastic job putting together a cute, funny story with just a few simple words! This is the first book my son ever read all by himself, and it's probably my favorite out of this series. I also like the fact that this series has original stories, rather than just something canned about some cartoon characters that usually doesn't even have a story in there. I've already got about 4 of these Penguin Young Readers, and I'm going to go out and buy some more.
My grandsons absolutely love this book! We started reading this book when they were 4yo. It has your sight words, numbers, and colors. The repetition is just enough for your little ones to learn the words as they read. The rhythm and rhyming words help the story flow. The boys are 6 now but still enjoy reading this fun and silly story!
