Any cookbook by Ina is going to be well-made and good-looking. It is important to remember that this edition concentrates on comfort food as the title indicates. As such, I was not expecting new recipes as it would have been a contradiction in terms. The recipes are old favourites with a twist. It is up to each and everyone to decide wether these updates are worth the expense. I know I will be trying some of the recipes in this book as I like to tweak and improve any food that I cook on a regular basis. It may seem light weight to some, but there you are!
The Barefoot Contessa is one of my favorite chefs! I have several of her cookbooks and none of them are a disappointment! In this cookbook, I noticed that many of the recipes require ingredients that are a little on the pricey side. Many of her recipes require various liquors. I don’t drink so for one recipe that I was interested in making, I would’ve had to buy three different bottles of alcohol. That’s a lot of money to invest for one recipe and then let it sit on the shelf. Considering this has been a year where many people have been laid off or have lost their jobs because of Covid, it might’ve been nice to consider the impact on the wallet. Other than that, the recipes are delicious and done in Impeccable Barefoot Contessa style!
Good cookbook, but on first look, was expecting a bit more. Nevertheless it is worth it to buy this book. It seems very much the same to previous books. I do like the story lines and the extensive testing they have done On the recipes. I would give 5 stars to the effort put Into this book and the explanations and directions given, but I thought the actual dishes could be a little more attractive to want to cook. It feels like There’s not enough “I just HAVE to make that” dishes. I also feel like this is a cookbook that will grow on you and will eventually be a go to.. I’m sure I will change my mind over time but this is my first impression.
Love everything about Ina's cook books. The photos, the easy recipes, the cooking tips, the entire life style. . Although I can always find a recipe or two that becomes a family favorite, I am afraid the recipes are getting a bit repetitive. Bottom line tho is I don't care. The comfort-cozy feeling I always get from her cook books gives me a sense of I family, friends and home.
I actually read this in October and needed to try some of the recipes before I reviewed it. In terms of writing, it is your general Barefoot Contessa effervescence. She uses a lot of kielbasas, (surprisingly) carbs, and starches, but I guess that is what comfort food is. I think the biggest travesty is the "whitewashing" of a variety of culturally specific recipes, but hey she knows her audience.
In terms of recipes, not the best of her books. On many of her other recipes, I was like "wow that's whimsical, I would have never thought of that." This series not so much.
I have all of Ina Gartens books. I have tried a couple of recipes. The cod and waffle potatoes. They were good. I think there are some interesting recipes but I think her previous books are better. Of course I have many more to try. I do always cut on amount of salt. Seems like she always suggests more than I prefer to use.
