This was a very good introductory title, along with the other 2 in the series, on the war in Russia 1941-45; "Ostfront" to the Germans and "Great Patriotic War" to the Russians. A good guide to the background - both political and military, and the campaigns themselves. Some good photos that I've never seen before. Every facet of the fighting is covered, including partisan actions and the cruel nature of this war that was nothing like the almost gentlemanly fighting on the Western Front. This volume covers the rise of the Soviet forces after seemingly struggling to cope with the powerful German war machine, but the Soviets had the manpower and the industry to counteract any German military superiority in the long run, in addition Russian losses, both in men and materiel, could be replaced whereas Germany's losses could not.
My brother-in-law had this entire set of books on his Christmas list. He lives in a town that has very little stores in the area. He already owned 2 or 3 of these books and really wants the rest. We ordered a few for him for Christmas and he was very happy with them.
