I have always loved Tomie De Paola’s books, and wasn’t disappointed with this one. “Patrick: Patron Saint of Ireland” is a wonderful book that tells the real story of St. Patrick, but also includes some of the legends he’s known for, such as the one about the snakes. It is illustrated in De Paola’s masterful artwork, that is simple enough for children, but beautifully detailed. As a parochial school chaplain, I read it to my students in grades Pre-K3-5th grade. I like for them to learn about the saints and how they can provide us with living examples of how to live as Christians. They loved it!
My children and I love this! What an inspirational true story that is seldom told. I'm so glad I purchased this and we will enjoy this for many years. I even read it during a children's St. Patrick's Day Party that I led for my community.
I bought this book to study Saint Patrick with my children (ages 5 and 8) for our homeschool curriculum (we follow the Charlotte Mason philosophy of education). This book is beautifully written and illustrated! We had a really simple but rich lesson that day. We read it together, then they each made their own illustration along with a narration of what we read. We had a great discussion around the themes of the book. That evening we enjoyed an Irish inspired dinner (including an Irish soda bread that wasn't very sweet and has since become a family favorite). I loved that this book was the main element of our study and celebration of Saint Patrick.
I love this author for school. This one had more religious elements than others, though I can still use in my library. The back has some short summaries of other versions that I’ll probably use whole group for more balance.
Wonderful drawings and engaging narration for 2-3rd graders. Many historic accounts of St. Patrick along with some more traditional/local myths/stories. Nice to have an engaging book about St. Patrick that doesn't involve leprachauns, pots of gold and beer. Only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is because this book is a paperback instead of hardbound : If the kids have free access to it they will destroy it. Since the book is out of print I was very lucky to be able to find a used copy which was in very good shape.
First of all let me say that I am biased because I LOVE Tomie de Paola's books. All of them. My kids have them and we have read them again and again over the years. Love the illustrations and the true stories that he tells. I ordered this as a first communion gift for my sweet neighbor boy Paddy, who is named after St. Patrick. He loved it and his parents loved it. What a special little book! It's paperback but still very nice.
