My Rating: 🌟🌟1/2 Type: Standalone Genre: Young Adult Fantasy Primary Characters: Shadow king & Alessandra Stathos, Narration: Limited third party
I am an amateur in this genre and still trying to explore and understand this big fantasy world. I picked this book for 2 reasons. One because of reviews/ popularity and other this being standalone, as many fantasy books are generally series. This dystopian world of power and deception wasn’t for me. This book was severely underdeveloped, and wholly uninspiring. In short I was disappointed.
The plot blurb was really interesting and the beginning was promising. Female protagonist Alessandra was antagonist. She was murderous, self-absorbed and wicked. She has set her eyes on Shadow king. She wants to rule the kingdom, have power, be remembered, and have a strong reputation. Her plan seemed simple. But is it really that simple to work on? 1) Woo the Shadow King. 2) Marry him. 3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.
I was super disappointed with Kallias, the Shadow King. He was supposed to be the strongest and intimidating person in six kingdoms, but he just lagged in all. The man is called the Shadow King and yet we never get more than a passing understanding of what that means. His powers weren’t properly explored.
The voice of the novel didn’t resonate with Shadow world. There was no consistency in writing. Plot era altered from semi-automatic revolver to arrow. From Switching on light to burning candle. It varied in a blink from page to page. Eg- “In the name of Devil” to “Name of God”
There was a lack in character depth. Plot was promising but was very downgraded. Romance was bland with no chemistry. Writing style was pathetic.
I wish The Shadows Between Us would’ve been something more sinister. Sadly, this book just flopped for me. What are your thoughts? Don’t let my thoughts hamper your decision to pick this up. Read and decide for yourself and let me know your views.
Holy macaroni! I did not think I would enjoy this book as much as I did. The premise was interesting enough, but Tricia really did write a Slytherin lover story and I was there for it.
If she would have made this into a series, I would have devoured all of it. Alessandra Stathos is a one of a kind character and my moral compass is broken. It’s in pieces.
As always, it was evident from the premise that the Shadow King would be one of the MCs, and with the title, all I had in mind was that there would be a love that was promised.
This book had a lot of interesting people, but I must say - Alessandra steals the show. Even from the Shadow King. He is the generic - Tall, Dark and Handsome hero. I couldn’t help but get Azriel vibes from him. If you do not know who Azriel is, please go fall in a ditch somewhere!
She however is someone you goes above and beyond to make you want to hate her but you love her instead.
I love how she’s a bad bad girl, with ambitions running strong and a penchant for cruelty in the face of being hurt.
The book starts with -
“They’ve never found the body of the first and only boy who broke my heart.”
She kills her first love and feels zero remorse. It brings her peace. She sounds like a lovable psychopath through the the first three quarters of the book. We start to see behind her craziness. The hurt behind being left by her first love, and her utter hatred of anything which sounds remotely like love and passion. She is vary. She is a woman scorned. Very Shakespearian. She’s been neglected by people growing up, but behind all of that lies a woman who loves and loves so deeply that I have no doubt her passion manifests as murder. Damon Salvatore, anyone?
Also, this was somehow empowering in a very weird way. I love how women-centric this book is.
“A woman’s worth is not decided by what’s between her legs but by what is in her mind. “ YASS, QUEEEN!
The writing is really good and the book keeps you enthralled from beginning to end. It never seems boring, and the characters all have separate motivations.
The only thing that could have been better, is probably giving the Shadow King more screen time, but I get how difficult that is given all the layers Tricia added to our dearest Alessandra.
Parting words:This is a delightful read, and I would 100% recommend. The romance is on point, and the plot has more depth than most books of this kind. Go, Tricia!
I am going to start this review by being honest and saying that this is not my type of book. That being said I know others will completely adore it, and I understand why. This novel is unique, I have never read a book where I could not like the main characters or agree with their actions and I am pretty sure that is what the Author wanted. I dont think I am being unfair when I say Alessandra is a villain. She is villainous, selfish, arrogant and mostly unfeeling towards others. She is also very complex and strong. I like Alessandras strength and consistency. She doesnt back down or shy away from what she wants. She knows the effect she has on people and doesnt hide behind modesty. She likes men and is completely unashamed of that. I have seen some comments saying that this is a book about slytherins. I agree. I just struggle with how unlikable the characters are (In my opinion) They are villains. The shadow king is a strong ruler and he needs a strong woman by his side. They crush down rebellions of the poor every day man and what I would call 'the good guy' (though he is a muppet) There is unapologetic murder, a basically non existent sister relationship and the main bad guy got more sympathy from me than the king. But it was well written and engrossing.
The concept is interesting and that's what attracted me to the book in the first place, but the way it's written is not captivating- it's the complete opposite actually, it's quite boring and mundane. I did like the characters, they both has this powerful and intelligent aura to them. The confidence the protagonist has is very nice to read, because it's uncommon for women in books to be caring, smart and confident at the same time. I think the issue is the storyline is under- developed, there is a lot of mystery in terms of why the prince can't touch any woman, but the reason isn't profound, it's very basic which was disappointing. Also, I just don't like royal etiquettes and as you can imagine, this book had a lot of them. It's definitely different from other books I have read, but not to my liking.
I loved this book. It is rare that I enjoy a stand alone novel but this was oddly gripping right from the start. The two lead characters are both morally grey which in itself makes a delightful change and in truth, forced me to binge-read this in the space of one evening. There were a couple of attempts to bring in a ‘feminine power’ message that I felt weren’t really embedded properly - as if added to tick a box - but otherwise, a really great read that I’ve already recommended to my friends.
I wholeheartedly loved this book It only took me a day to read, but I loathed the time that I wasn’t engrossed in this story. I loved that Alessandra was unapologetically herself the whole way through, that these characters were flawed - seriously flawed - individuals, that I was reading about a character who had a plan, was willing to execute her plan and was so confident in her ability to do so! It makes such a change from MC’s who are thrust into situations they have no confidence to deal with. In fact, I found myself convinced that Alessandra had this throughout all the issues she encountered, and boy was there a lot of drama. Tricia Levenseller clearly loves throwing in problems and hiccups for our characters to deal with, and at times I was unsure how it was going to be possible to unravel the tangle that was being woven around the plot - especially as at around 320 pages it’s not a long book at all. I counted around 10 big plot points which is a lot to deal with in such a small page count. There were a few moments that I don’t think paid off, and I think that some issues were not dealt with in a meaningful way. But hell I don’t care that some problems were written just to be solved a few pages later. It was like watching a transfixing telenovela that I just adored. The Shadows Between Us has issues, but that doesn’t make it any less of a delectable treat that I devoured and wished for so much more of. I had such a good time reading this book, and it’s definitely making my top reads of 2020. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Five Stars - Undoubtedly
Seen some mixed reviews and thought it might be a bit cheesy, but honestly loved this book. I loved the characters and their relationship and found the whole dynamic between them fab. There’s a lot of insta love in stand alones but i loved the build up between these two. I don’t know why I also really like that they’re not a couple of do gooders trying to save the world, because that’s been done a million times already, so this was something different.
Completely apprehensive at first, almost £13 for the hardback(the paperback version wasn't available until September and wanted this ASAP) and the book was less than 400 pages but was completely worth it for how quick it ensnared me.
Found Alessandra to be really refreshing actually, very intelligent and overall a really good, deep character. She's strategic, quick whitted and the undertones of empowerment make her development all the more richer. The action and bantar between herself and the other MC the shadow King, was quick, intense and both were full of chemistry. This includes the other side characters aswell.
The action itself was good, the romance was nice although I personally wished for a bit more... Steam? There was all this build up and chemistry that equated to a rather disappointing description but nonetheless, the chemistry was enjoyable.
Towards the end, the plot felt slightly rushed. There were parts in which the plot kind of slowed down and then raced to tie everything together;however with the many twists and turns, it wasn't as much as a bother and could of been solved with there being a few extra pages.
Overall, very enjoyable and gripping! Actually wish there was more of the book, the world building was fine especially with it being from 1st person perspective and money well spent.
