4.0 out of 5 starsDark academia story with tragedy and grief lingering
Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on 29 August 2021
really liked The Silent Patient so this disappointed me a bit. Even though I loved the plot there was a lack of "thriller vibe"

What I loved

writing style of this book. It felt like I was floating through the pages. I am naturally a fast reader but the writing style has made reading easier for me.

short chapters and dark academia vibe

overall premise

There were a lot of mentions and details about Greek mythology .I love it because I have little to no knowledge about Greek mythology and this novel was very informative in this aspect. The mentions of mystic Greek mythology characters and their tragic stories.

melancholic vibe , making the tragedy and grief linger till the end.

I loved the silent patient crossover

I felt like the twist in the end was somehow forced
Till the very end the author made us believe a person is the killer ( avoiding spoilers) and then boom!! there you go with a shocking ending you didn't see coming. There should have been some hints of the ending. I am not at all happy with the ending; it felt unrealistic and disjointed.
The ending made me so mad. I guessed the killer but not the motive.

3.0 out of 5 starsGood but Not Upto the Mark

Mariana Andros, a group therapist is convinced that magnificent and charismatic Edward Fosca, Greek Tragedy professor of Cambridge, is a murderer. Narcissistic and flirtatious professor, Edward Fosca is loved by everyone in the Cambridge, mostly by the group of young women, named The Maidens, formed by Fosca himself. Things turned bad when a young student of the Maidens group, close friend of Mariana's niece Zoe, gets murdered. Inspite of having his alibi, Mariana suspects and was certain that Fosca ha murdered the student. And now, she is after Fosca and could go to any extent to prove Fosca is the actual murderer. But is he really?
Let me tell you that I am a big fan of @alex.michaelides debut novel #thesilentpatient and i was too much excited when he announced his second novel, #themaidens . I was expecting a good thriller, dark academia when i picked up this one, set in the beautiful campus of Cambridge. But, but but after reading from cover to cover i must say i am disappointed. May be because i was expecting wayy too much or may be because this is really poorly written. I rightly guessed the ending even before i was 50% into the book.

The good part of this book is the beautiful descriptions of the Cambridge campus that made me think of having Doraemon's Anywhere door and visit the place right then.

The bad?? A little longer list as i have too many complaints. When a short book like The Maidens feel unnecessary stretchy then there's definitely something very wrong with the writing style. Under developed characters. Incompetent police and detectives who are always left behind by a group therapist. Too many plot holes bigger than the potholes in our locality.
Trust me, my tirade can go on and on but i dont want to make this review as stretchy as The Maidens. So, withdrawing my cursor by saying that if you have more than enough time, you can pick it up.

4.0 out of 5 stars One more Outstanding psychological thriller from the author of The Silent Patient

I was so so excited for this book to come out..I've had bouncy balls for feet ever since the start of June...

Does it deliver??….hell yeaa!!!

The protagonist Mariana is a group therapist who comes to the college where her niece studies to investigate a string of murders of young girls..looks like a serial killer is on loose..

It was like unboxing a bunch of scary presents..it's a psychological thriller in true Alex's style...
There is a disembodied narrator I kept trying to guess who it is...Omg!! when that suspense unravelled I was so stunned that I went back a couple of pages to re read portions where I felt could be a hint I would have missed...Man!! was it unexpected..

Also there are portions which refer to the silent patient as well which gave a added flavor to the whole plot..this is a kind of unrelated pre-qual to the Silent Patient..

It's a 4/5 for me... kept me on the edge throughout...n the climax just was mind blowing

I cannot begin to describe what an incredibly stunning read this was. His debut novel 'The Silent Patient' was the ultimate read that got me officially initiated into this genre (dramatic but TRUE) and I had expected no less from 'The Maidens' either. And guess what? It gave me even more! 'The Maidens' is exactly why I love psychological thrillers so freakin' much. And you know what? I kinda feel proud that I could - quite early on - correctly identify the person who had been writing the memoir! And I was like YAASSSS I KNEW IT!!!

Haha. Now. I don't want to say ANYTHING negative about this book, thanks to the brilliant plot twists, the captivating pace, the intriguing characters, and the conscientious descriptions of the aesthetic Cambridge University. Nevertheless, one aspect of this book that could have been done better was the number of red herrings. There were just too many. And as someone who digs thrillers like cake, I can tell you (quite accurately) that everytime a person is associated with a red herring, that person is never the killer. That way, I had to strike out almost all the suspicious characters before the big reveal and duh. I was right. But it didn't matter since I had already had my suspicions with the least suspicious characters anyway.

All in all, it was an unbelievably enthralling read. This book exceeded my expectations which were already quite high, to begin with! I really cannot wait for his next one. I wonder what that's going to be about. ❤

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read but was expecting way more than this.

So I finally managed to read The Maidens, and having an immense interest in Greek tragedy , I must say I have enjoyed it thoroughly. The dark Academia vibes , the aesthetics of Cambridge University and the whole arc of Greek mythology got me hooked up. But I was really flabbergasted with the ending. I must say that the ending could have been much more detailed but I found it to be extremely vague and unnecessary. Though I kinda guessed the person to whom the memoir belonged. Anyways having read The Silent Patient, was expecting a lot more. The Maidens is definitely a one time read .

The quality of this book was, well, awful. It was such an amazing read, fast and enjoyable. But oh well, it was like someone had abused the book and treated it like heck before sending it off.

•Half the pages weren't cut, leading them to tear badly when I tried to separate them
•One of the pages wasn't just printed. Randomly.
•It had mud stains and folds galore. There were random stains as well on various corners of the pages.
•The cover had bleach stains!!! And for some reason the book blurb calls the college St Christommer's College. For 5 minutes I thought I was reading wrong.

If you wanna read this book, definitely do. Don't buy it here. It broke my heart seeing the book this way, and not being able to do anything except write this. Happy reading.

i bought this book for my best friend, but i read it first before i gave to them :P
anyways the story line was really good and so was the twisty ending
its a murder mystery book where the main character is a psychologist and how the series of murders revolve around her.
i would definitely recommend it to anyone who really loves murder mysteries.
the book came in a good condition too without any damage :)

The book catches the readers attention, but the plot is kind of not shocking. The attempt to connect to old book isn't the worth of attempting and the some characters presence itself is confusing.

I had high expectations from this book after reading silent patient but this book disappointed me a little. It was a good read but not what I expected.
Why was Mariana involved in the case?
And there are so many unusual circumstances in the book that didn’t make sense to me.
I am glad I am finally over with this book.
