I am a fan of Diane Kelly’s books; I still miss the Tara Holloway and Nick series! However, this book was a fast read and an good story. It was told from two viewpoints—that of Misty and of Yeti her cat. Diane is an animal lover and there are some dogs featured in this story as well. Misty buys a lodge in the mountains and one of the guests is murdered and she assists the police with finding the killer due to her good ideas and instincts. Other characters that will likely play a part in future books are Brynn, Patty from the diner and Rocky about whom she has been having romantic thoughts. I enjoyed this book and hope for more in the series.
Getaway with Murder: Mountain Lodge Mysteries #1 Diane Kelly ~ 296 pp. St. Martin’s Press Released: October 26, 2021
Misty Murphy just turned fifty, the ink is drying on her divorce papers, and she just bought a mountain lodge to run. I’m an avid cozy reader, and Kelly is always an automatic buy/pre-order for me. My favorite series of hers is her Paw Enforcement series. I love the Mountain Lodge series just as much. I am drawn to the fact that Kelly shows us what the animals involved in her books are thinking. It just adds another layer of magic, somehow. It’s her unique and playful style, and that’s why she’s an automatic pre-order for me. I loved the mystery, and I was actually right with the whodunit and why. That’s rare for me, since I easily flip flop between suspects. Simply put, she’s darn good! I also loved the touch or romance, and Kelly gives us characters we cheer for and become invested in. This book certainly provides that. I am already becoming impatient for book two, and I just finished book one last night/this morning around 2 AM. This book would make a great gift for any cozy, mystery, humor, or romance lover. Kelly is just brilliant at her craft. 5 stars without even needing to think about it. I wish I could rate it higher. My only other wish would be that Yeti (the beautiful white cate in the book) spoke to us more. I just can’t get enough of the animal characters! This book is just pure relaxation and joy! Ms. Kelly is a good writer. Love her Paw Enforcement series. She used the same style in this book. Used the viewpoint of main character, Misty, and the world through her cat, Yeti. In Paw, the thoughts of Bridgid, played an important part. Clues from a trained police dog. In this book, Yeti is just cute and her thoughts don't enhance the story. That's why I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5.
That out of the way, the mystery grabbed me. Misty is a great character. 50 years old and starting a new career by owning a lodge in North Carolina. She's a decent, smart woman. She doesn't plunge headlong into facing the killer on her own. But she's the one who uncovers whodunit. The secondary characters from the sexy Rocky (handyman) to Patty, the owner of the next door restaurant to the detective, Highcloud, are all nicely fleshed out. Recommend this book! Hope Ms. Kelly continues the series.
Getaway With Murder is a delightful cozy with a Hallmark vibe. Misty is a freshly divorced mother of two who is starting over by opening a mountaintop lodge complete with the flannel shirted handyman. The mystery is just difficult enough to keep you wondering.
This is the first time I have read anything by this author and was interested in this book since it's set in western North Carolina where I live. The characters are charming, funny and familiar. I would definitely classify this as a cozy mystery. This is a fast read that would go well sitting by the fire with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine! Looking forward to reading more from this series.
