1.0 out of 5 stars Quality, where are you?

The content so far is ok. But look at the figure in the picture I uploaded. It is a leadership framework. I had to write ‘character’ myself as it was not there. It is either badly drawn (why would you name the other factors but not the central one?!) or it is a typo. For a $35 book at his 3rd edition? Really?

3.0 out of 5 stars A little too abstract

It’s never really clear how the authors come to their mathematical conclusions with their data. So some of the statements seem a little far-fetched. You have to do your own research into their methods to fully understand, which weakens the overall story.

I purchased this book and before I could start reading it someone told that I would not like it, so I never started reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10 Fatal Flaws That Consistently Lead to Failure in Leadership
Reviewed in the United States on 23 June 2020
The authors of “The New Extraordinary Leader: Turning Good Managers into Great Leaders (3rd Edition)” note: “The great benefit of periodic physical exams is that they discover a condition we didn’t know about. Caught early, these problems can often easily be corrected.”

Then they add, “We think every leader should have a periodic checkup on their leadership health. Everyone benefits. Roughly a third will be surprised to learn that some behavior is holding them back. Only by discovering what it is can they fix it. The rest will get a few tips to make them even better.”

Whew! Just when you think you’re conversant with the leadership literature—another book appears and you’re back in class for Leadership 101. But…that’s OK.

Assignment: Make a list of the “10 Fatal Flaws That Consistently Lead to Failure in Leadership.” Actually, you don’t have to make a list. Authors John Zenger and Joseph Folkman have already done your homework:

#1. Not Inspiring Due to a Lack of Energy and Enthusiasm
#2. Accepting Mediocre Performance in Place of Excellent Results
#3. Lack of Clear Vision and Direction
#4. Loss of Trust Stemming from Perceived Bad Judgment and Poor Decisions
#5. Not Collaborative or a Team Player
#6. Not a Good Role Model (Failure to Walk the Talk)
#7. No Self-Development and Learning From Mistakes
#8. Lacking Interpersonal Skills [Note: There are “Sins of Commission” and “Sins of Omission.”]
#9. Resistant to New Ideas, Thus Did Not Lead Change or Innovate
#10. Focus Is on Self, Not the Development of Others

Here’s the good news: Fatal flaws be fixed, say the authors. Every chapter is must read, but I’d suggest that Chapter 7, “Fatal Flaws Must Be Fixed,” is a must-must-read chapter. See the five critical steps for fixing fatal flaws, including “Seek the Help and Involvement of Others.”

Generously endorsed by Marshall Goldsmith (his book, “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There,” was my 2013 book-of-the-year) and James M. Kouzes and others, this third edition is packed with extraordinary content and practical next steps.

Note: As an Amazon Vine reviewer, I received this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

3.0 out of 5 stars Data Dense and a Bit Dry
Reviewed in the United States on 26 January 2020
I love leadership books, and am always interested in books driven by data. This book has data in spades. It reads more like an academic manual than most of the other leadership books on the market. It is absolutely light on feel good and fluff, and deep dives in numbers - tons of numbers. So many numbers, figures, facts, graphs, that I was overwhelmed and had a hard time figuring out the main points. For my way of thinking, this presentation was simply too in the weeds, and it felt a bit like falling down a rabbit hole with twists and turns while trying to figure out which was up for the topic at hand.

If you are data drive, like facts and figures, this book will probably be a better read for you than it was for me. The data and process the authors used in figuring out the information is updated and unlike other material out there on leadership.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great information
Reviewed in the United States on 25 September 2020
This is a great book for people already in leadership positions who want to developers better skills and for people seeking to become leaders. My company has instituted a book club and this would be the perfect book to help start conversations and help develop new ideas. I like how the book has broken the chapters and explores the roles of both individuals and companies. It covers the benefits and draw backs of many different leadership styles and talks about the different environments that best match each style and how behaviors can be modified to adapt to different work environments. It covers a lot of information but is broken down into manageable doses.

Good read for anyone wanting to improve their leadership skills. Around 300 pages, the title covers many topics on the subject, including:

1. 33 insights about leadership that you need to know.
2. 5 areas of leadership behavior.
3. 25 suggestions for how you can improve your leadership skills.
4. 20 leadership competencies most organizations value.
5. 10 fatal flaws in leadership.
6. 5 steps to take to fix a leadership flaw.
7. Elements of a successful workplace leadership development system.
8. Workplace leadership development practices that work.

The title is easy to read, smoothly transitions from chapter to chapter, may be completed in a few sittings, and contains a lot of helpful practical advice. Read and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for leaders of all levels!

I have read other editions of this book and this 3rd edition is not much different, so if you're a repeat, you don't really need this edition in particular. If you've NEVER read any iterations of this book before, I HIGHLY recommend it. It's a great reminder of best practices and new ideas for older leaders, and a great introduction and "get you going" if you're a new leader. There is something in here for every type of leader in every type of industry. It is a great foundation for not just how to lead, but why you lead. It also challenges you to recognize what type of leader you are and the implications that has for your followers and yourself and interactions with others. Overall, this is an awesome book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Insights
Reviewed in the United States on 11 April 2020
Based on over a million observations and written with both an academic and practical bent, The New Extraordinary Leader is a great read on leadership trends and effectiveness. Focusing on actionable steps for leadership development, the primary premise of "leaders can be made" is backed up with data and specific elements to focus on for leadership development. Emphasizing the concept of reinforcing strengths and fixing fatal flaws, the book also looks at correlations among leadership behaviors as well as elements looking at gender and 360 degree feedback as elements in leadership measurement and effectiveness. A good book on the subject, and one that will be staying in my leadership library.
