This is a book I have gifted to at least 5 seven year olds! Not hear back from any of them. Guess they are more attracted to the Geronimo series...Alas, didn't work with the lot back home. Personally, I read it twice!!! :)
This Kate DiCamillo book is truly a winner. Flora and Ulysses is about love, teamwork and companionship. This is one of my all time favourite books. I think all nature lovers should read this book about a squirrel, a girl and their adventures together.
Ulysses and Flora met when Ulysses got stuck up a vacuum cleaner. Mrs. Tickingham, Flora's neighbour, got the vacuum cleaner as a birthday present. She was vacuuming on the grass when she swept Ulysses up. Flora shook the vacuum cleaner and the squirrel fell down with patches of fur missing. Flora thought that the squirrel was dead so she tried giving the squirrel mouth to mouth breathing. It worked and she took the squirrel home. She named the squirrel Ulysses after the name of the vacuum cleaner that swept him up.
One of my favourite adventures is at the giant doughnut store where Ulysses is in a box and Flora makes the mistake of talking to him while Rita takes their orders. Ulysses jumps into Rita's hair. Rita screams in panic and then Ulysses flies out and hits the glass.
Another one of the adventures I like is when Mr. Klaus, the cat attacks Flora's father and bites him on the ear. Ulysses distracts the cat by leaping and pulling on his tail. He lifts the cat into the air and throws him towards the wall.
I recommend this book to children over the age of 6 and adults. Happy Reading !
Oh my lady ga ga that was a spectacular book and I seriously think that either Kate dicamillo is a absolute word genius or she has actually experienced something like that because it was so good that it's hard for me to believe that she made it up thank you so much and here is just some of the things I love about your style your artwork in your books because most chapter books don't have pictures so your style is unique and your very intensely real characters and just uhhhhhhbh we will be here for ages if I go on but I really recommend this book who like a laugh on every page who want to read something so different and who want yo have an immense amount of pleasure reading this book of gold.
I wanted to read something more challenging to my 6 year old at bedtime, in the hope that she may start to get more interested in chapter books. She is absolutely in love with this story, it is just fabulous, so much so that both my husband and I stayed in the room at bedtime reading to her for over a week because we also wanted to know what happened next. It's funny and deep and complicated and simple all at once. There are some huge words but nothing she couldn't grasp. We are on our second read through as she wants to hear it all over again. We are looking now at the younger books from Kate DiCamillo which she will hopefully read herself. This is a must in any child's library.
