To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
I was very excited to buy this set of books for my great-nephew. I'd heard one of the authors on public radio talking about it, and read the best reviews. After reading them, I immediately returned them. Quality was great, but the story sucks. There was no way I would have given them as a gift.
I ordered this book without reading it prior to purchasing, what a mistake! While marketed as a children's book, the plot is horrendous for young children. One shape, the triangle, decides to scare his friend Square, who is terrified of snakes. Square then chases Triangle home, and can't fit in triangle's door (it's shaped like a triangle). This terrifies Triangle, who is scared of the dark. I don't find this funny, amusing, or appropriate. It teaches no compassion, understanding, or empathy. I cannot recommend this story to anyone.
I purchased this book for my grandchildren ages 4-6. I was very disappointed in the story -- especially since so many reviews were positive. The story involves "sneaky tricks" that Triangle and Square play on each other. The tricks play on the characters' deepest fears -- the fear of snakes for one character and the fear of being left in the dark for the other. There is no modeling of compassion, empathy or kindness exhibited by the characters -- something that is important to find in literature for young children. The illustrations are stunning to an adult but very dark for a young child.
