I am really picky with children's stories, when it comes to safety. The book is good quality. The illustrations are really cool to take in, when reading story. The story it's self is a really good idea for kids to get interested in camping. But , for me, the story lacks a few things , as to being safe when camping at a lake. I'm sure most will discuss what is safe when reading the story. So my usual 4 stars , if I feel the story needs some changes.
We read books to our students' ages 4-6 and this book was a winner. Most of our kids had never been camping before but could relate to Ernestine's experiences. They were also really excited to hear about S'mores. Some highlights about this book: - positive family interactions - vegan/ vegetarian eating is mentioned without it feeling like a cliche - 2 parents are never seen together which allows the kids to decide for themselves whether there are other characters that are not on the page. This is great since every family is different. - it gets kids curious about nature and their own interactions in it.
This is a fun book about going camping for the first time. My grandchildren are not very excited about camping, and this one gave them a look inside the experience and made them want to try it. Our family is multi-racial and my daughter does not like preachy books that include multi-ethnic characters, but show all kinds of people and cultures in stories of everyday life. Our whole family enjoyed this story.
Ernestine is excited for her first camping trip but quickly realizes it is a bit different from what she had expected. A beautiful story of opening your mind to new experiences and making memories despite a few bumps along the way.
My grandson and granddaughter, ages 8 and 6, loved the book. Their family is stuck at home during the pandemic, but the camping story inspired them to set up a little camp in their backyard - almost as good as a trip!
