When a mysterious parcel lands on Kennedy’s front porch, filled with metal and nuts and bolts, he thinks it’s a gift from his grandfather. Kennedy convinces his fellow Enginerd, Dan to help him put it together and they discover that the materials in the box are a robot, a robot that likes to eat. Kennedy does his best to keep Greeeg, the robot, a secret but things get out of control and chaos ensues. A great read for middle grade boys who like funny books with smart characters who save the day.
A mysterious package arrives on Ken’s doorstep containing a robot. Cool, right?! This isn’t just any robot though. I mean, the thing…I’m sorry, Greeeg put himself together. Let me say this again: the robot put himself together! Still thinking this robot is cool or might he be just a little bit creepy? I’ll let you decide. He eats everything in sight, causes things to go bump in the night, and may just get Ken grounded until the year 2039! When he and his friends unite, they might just have what it takes to keep things under control but they need Y-O-U. Join the EngiNerds and stop this craziness before it gets completely out of hand.
The bottom line is that EngiNerds is HILARIOUS! You will certainly want to use this as a read-aloud with students. I’ve read it with 2nd and 3rd grade and it has left us all in stitches. Even the kids who thought they were too cool to listen to the librarian read to them really got into the story. Honestly, what’s not to love about a farting robot? I’ve book talked EngiNerds to 5th grade students also and now there is a waiting list for who gets the next copy. In fact, I had to make sure I bought at least one more copy because I have to feed our students’ excitement. I never want to see that fizzle out simply because I don’t have enough copies.
Beyond the book’s humor, we’ve had some great EngiNerds conversations about friendship, not wanting to eat lunch in the cafeteria, what kids like to build, loving science and math, who wants to become an engineer, and the list goes on. We can’t wait to get our chance to connect with the author so we can talk EngiNerds with him! Jarrett truly has written a book that speaks to the heart of our students’ interests. We have all become instant fans. Bring on book two Jarrett, bring it on!
In short, read EngiNerds. Your students will be so happy you did.
P.S. I love the dog Kitty. Wait, what’s the dogs name? Yes, it’s Kitty-bwahahaha!!!
What I thought would be a great gift for my grandchildren little did I realize what I fun read it was for their grandfather. I ended up devoting straight reading EngiNerds through from beginning to end before I realized Jarrett unleashing a horde of hungry robot was more than a fun read for young and old. Could Jarrett be warning a older generation about the possible misuse of artificial intelligence was he suggesting a hidden metaphor of the downsides of machine learning? There is much to enjoy in this book as the dialogue is crisp and the inevitable fart jokes brought a smile to my face reminiscent of my high school days. Perhaps Jarrett's next book will expand his artificial intelligence warning and themes... this time for adults.
What kiddo wouldn't like a book with farting robots? When Ken receives a mysterious robot that is eating him out of house and home, he isn't quite sure what to do! He then discovers that his other Enginerd friends have also received the robots. He and his friends find that the robots are becoming violent and must figure out a way to stop them! There is lots of excitement and action as Ken and his friends solve the mystery of who sent the robots and develop a plan to stop them from eating everything in town. Fun and entertaining book for kids!
I have to believe that author, Jarrett Lerner is a big kid at heart because he knows how to make kids (and grown-ups) laugh. Not just giggle, but huge belly laughs. My ten-year-old son and I read Enginerds together, and sometimes we laughed so hard, my husband would come into the room to see what all the ruckus was about.
The chapters are short and sweet and moved the story forward at a fast-paced clip. The dialogue is funny and the story is compelling. Where did these farting robots come from? Why are there here? Good questions with excellent answers.
Enginerds is a perfect choice for any young reader, but it's especially ideal for kids who read graphic novels and are ready for a new challenge.
I volunteer at an after school program providing homework help and encouragement to the students at a struggling elementary school in my community. These kids are incredibly smart and very enthusiastic about learning but literacy rates in this particular area are among the lowest in the country and many of these kids start school unable to identify letters, much less words. They have an uphill climb academically, but books like Enginerds engage them and inspire them in such a way that makes that journey easier. I am grateful for Jarret's clever writing and for the gift that this book is to these students. Keep them coming!!
This was an action packed, fun, adventure for all readers. My 8yo son devoured this and ranked it as his favorite read of the year (and this is a well read kid!). I loved that, despite the title, the book didn't dive into technical terms - it was just as accessible for the average Lego kid, to the one who might wonder just how these robots were capable of their antics. A good pick for the kid who loved Captain Underpants but is looking for something a bit more challenging.
This book proves that nerds will inherit the earth -- or at least save the earth from ravenous farting robots! Jarrett Lerner has written a fun and ingenious book that is sure to be a big hit with middle grade readers. His writing pops off the page with clever wordplay and snappy chapters. I had a blast with Ken and his friend and can't wait for the next installment!
The adult in me loved this book, and the kid in me, loved it even more. A fast-paced, hilarious read. Every night, I found myself saying, Okay, just one more chapter. Okay, I meant starting from now. No, I really meant now! Ken is an endearing main character, and everyone will love the robot, Greeeg! Because really, who doesn't love farting robots? I highly recommend this book and can't wait for the sequel!
I believe Mr Lerner might be a genius. Some how he figured out the formula, Robots + Fart Jokes= the perfect book for that kid who isn't so sure about this whole reading thing, or anyone who loves fast-paced, hilarious middle grade. I've personally tested this book on several of the most reluctant readers I know, and they tore it up. And, I understand there's a sequel in the works too. Well done!
