3.0 out of 5 stars No wow factor ! Staring her in straight the face , lol!!!!

It begs the question on why most if the five star reviewers are not Amazon verified buyers? The positive aspect was at least this one was an attempt to a h romance compared to the disaster of the first book in the series. When I accidentally first read Ms Dare's Seven ..... I was left reeling at how amazingly she wrote sensually visually I kindled most of her books and sat reading continuously , unfortunately i do not understand what has happened since then ? This book was lackluster with an H and h that left me quite unmoved almost slightly depressed between his self loathing and her belief that she is unlovable it slowly paced on and on in this gloom format !
Spoilers....
I felt sorry for his brother Piers he sounded genuinely nice and I cannot wait for his story if there is ever one but it just did not feel ok to be off fighting for your land while your brother steals your girl even if they did fall in love . It was also slightly unbelievable that they fancied each other for ever yet suddenly after 8 years decided to act on it , just not quite there?! Phoebe the sis sounds very promising too I just hope the Rain Man aspect is not overly done , it seems lately that to grab a concept and run repeatedly with it is the order of things , to fill pages.
The modern aspects killed it too , drinking eggs as boxer , her obtaining interest in brewery and pubs him training like Rocky Balboa and wanting a wedding planner and best man and a toast for the wedding , plucking chin hairs yuck, these in my opinion kill a historical romance.
Repetition that dragged on throughout , her blushing overly done it felt like the fact that he did not deserve her was drilled to us again and again as a page filler , a little tiring as was the fact that continuous surprises separated them ,quite repetitive and mostly unrealistic ,there are other ways to stop them from getting it on rather than interruptions ,too predictable there , you knew what was coming also prizefighter concept and words and everything about being champion overly used to death. Champion of England repeated to death mostly from him , ok we get it already we got it from the start of the book he almost sounded boastful as he mentioned it most of the time and immature wanting to run off and punch things.
Did not like the plump factor no problem in real life but this is my escape time , we all get it people fall in love despite appearances but calling her a heavyweight, granted by idiot brother in law , and overly rounded is a mood killer in my escape i mean I do not care for stunningly gorgeous but I do not appreciate overweight issues in sensuality either! And if it is ok then why is there not a nice plump lady on the cover? Slightly hypocritical one would think! Because the book would not sell , would it? That is our cover when reading !Go on put a , what did they call her rounded belly ? heavyweight on the cover , I can choose to honestly read about her , get my point! It is ok to hide her in the pages behind the hero's adoration , who by the way is never fat , but put her on the cover is a no no to the offending eye!
No excuse for his self loathing either or why anyone would not accept him ?! Fist cuffs were a hobby of the ton.
Riddled with editing errors eg. " staring her in straight the face " come on you have to laugh at this error ,there were many others, unfortunately, this one was during a sex scene which sadly turned laugh out loud comical for me .
Other elements that were uninspiring and tiring and repeated , her blushing overly done ! First kiss was a disappointment though other scenes yummy , Silly humor , the name Teddy too American , irrational fear about dog dying as was the reaction with the vigil. Her being an expert in beer just did not stick , she did not know she would inherit the castle to be so well informed , trainer jumping on his back and running it felt like an attempt at funny but fell flat right on to silly! Final peeve Epilogue immature and the name Clio I kept reading Cloy.
I still hold out hope that Ms Dare will deliver the old wow factor this one left me on a downer at least it was an h romance albeit bland , hence 3 stars and I believe its generous.

Aunque leo romántica, últimamente me he vuelto hacia otros géneros.

3.0 out of 5 stars I never thought I'd ask for a story to have a love triangle in it.

This was missing…..something I can’t quite put my finger on it but it needed a little dash of… OMG and I can’t believe I’m going to say this…. a love triangle.

*Ducks Head from flying fruit and shoes*

I NEVER really enjoy most love triangles but this book could have done with a little splash of one. Clio has been engaged to Piers for 8 years….8 years….8 years of him being away and them never getting married. It has become a big joke and a betting attraction in High Society as to IF there will ever be a wedding.

Well Clio is done with all of that. After she is left a castle by a dead relation she has no need to marry anymore and has set off to get Pier’s brother Rafe to sign some papers to dissolve the engagement contract. Except Rafe is bound and determined that Clio marry his brother so that Piers will settle down at home and Rafe can be free of handling all of the family business since his father’s death. Rafe will see them married even if he has to plan the entire wedding himself.

-- "He doesn’t love me.”
“Of course he does. Or he will. Love has a way of creeping up on a man. I’d venture to say love has to creep up on a man. If men ever saw it coming, we’d only run away.”

First there is Rafe will I like him, he is a ‘I’m a fighter not a lover’ sort of brute who is just a little misunderstood and broken. He has recently lost his championship boxing title and the only thing in the world he wants is to be left alone to he can train to reclaim it.

Second there is Clio. I like her most of the time but she doesn’t compare to Izzy from Romancing the Duke was this incredible funny full of life heroine who wanted a whirlwind romance so much she was sometimes just cutely ridiculous. Clio gets a little whiny at times and lets people walk all over her. I totally get it, with the upbringing and her background and then Rafe the fighter is going to teach her how to fight for herself….it is cute but she annoyed me sometimes. At least Rafe didn’t see it as sulking he knows how much family can cut you.

-- “Just because they're family doesn't mean they won't hurt you. It means they know how to cut deep.”

And then there is the ever absent Piers who didn’t show up until really close to the end of this story. He doesn’t seem like a bad guy he is just absent. I really would have liked to see him or some form of him earlier perhaps in love letters, or something but he is just gone.

Rafe and Clio do have some very tender and romantic moments together as they are thrown into some situations planning a wedding, the wedding Clio doesn’t want. I particularly liked the scene with the wedding cakes.

While most of Clio’s family is dismal she does have one slightly odd and peculiar sister that at least I enjoyed. Pheobe is odd I love odd girls and I would read an entire story about someone trying to win her since she is freaking adorable. Lost in numbers, calculations and string Pheobe added a lot to the story for me. She is the one friend that Clio seems to have in her family. Everyone else who tried to help her seemed to hurt her and damage her more than anything else. But Pheobe adds just enough innocence and straight man comedy that she is who made me laugh the most.

--“Yes, but everyone has swans,” Daphne said. “They’re supposed to be romantic because they mate for life.”
In the mirrored reflection, Phoebe arched one slender eyebrow. “So do vultures, wolves, and African termites. I haven’t seen any ice sculptures of them.”

This isn’t my favorite Tessa Dare story she has a few that I enjoyed so much more but it still have some fun banter, cutesy scenes and tender moments. Romancing the Duke is a must in the Tessa Dare collection but this one is really just when you don’t have anything else going on.

Not if Rafe Brandon can help it. A ruthless prizefighter and notorious rake, Rafe is determined that Clio will marry his brother—even if he has to plan the dratted wedding himself.

So how does a hardened fighter cure a reluctant bride's cold feet?'

Say Yes to the Marquess is the second book in Tessa Dare's Castles Ever After series.

I hadn't originally planned to read this book in the series as the description didn't really sound like my kind of book, but I have been reading the other books in the series and enjoyed them, so I'm planning to read the whole series. Plus I've been on a bit of a Tessa Dare book spree this month so why not! I am glad that I did choose to read it because I did enjoy it, even if it was really not the best I've read from her. It was a bit ridiculous and things felt a bit forced at times, but it was light and amusing. But considering that I thought going into this book that it wasn't really for me, I'm pretty happy with how much I did end up enjoying it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing--goofy instead of charming

I've loved all Tessa Dare's other books, especially the first Castles Ever After and the Spindle Cove series, but this was a disappointment for me. There was some good stuff (hot scenes! Heroine who stands up for herself!) but not enough. Dislikes--possible spoilers:

1. Too many "quirky" secondary characters. From the buffoonish trainer (casually and somewhat disparagingly depicted as bisexual) to the autism spectrum sister (to use another ahistorical term) to the dog to the sleepwalking brother-in-law to the bossy sister... It felt like silly characters just being thrown in to break up romantic scenes.

2. Inconsistent main characters. This wasn't as big of an issue, but something about the H/h felt phoned-in. For instance, the heroine develops body image issues halfway through the book, the hero varies from being articulate to being terrible with words, etc.

3. Plotting was thin. The heroine tells the hero over and over again she won't go through with the wedding, and the ways he tries to change her mind seem not only disrespectful of her feelings, but kind of...dumb. It almost felt like Dare knew how flimsy the plot was, and tried to patch it over with the silly secondary characters.

4. Not historical. All the wedding planning felt anachronistic, as did some of the social relations. It felt like a modern novel shoehorned into a historical setting.

I love Dare's books, and she's a very talented writer, but this wasn't up to her high standard for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Ms. Dare's best work
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 2 January 2015

Having read all of Ms. Dare's other books, I was hotly anticipating this release. However, even the title should have given me pause...I get she is trying to play with "marquess" but it is pronounced MAR-key.

On to the story...Clio has been engaged for 8 yrs to a diplomat who hasn't come home from abroad. She is tired of waiting, inherits a castle, and sees a sustainable future for herself. She just needs to get out of her engagement. In her Fiancé's absence, his brother, Rafe, is in control of the marquessate's business & can grant her a dissolution of the engagement. Rafe is a boxer trying to succeed against the strictures of the ton. He asks her to give him a week to convince her to plan the wedding and continue to wait for her fiancé. Cue the sexual tension and forbidden love.

The story was predictable. They both have inner conflict they are working through that takes up 70% of the story...we get it...She wants to be independent, he wants to be respected. They get together, Diplomat brother shows up at 90%, everything resolves itself too quickly and we are at the HEA. It felt like Ms. Dare was writing and writing, then realized she was going to go over her word count and tried to tie the bow too quickly. Then there was one lover's encounter that was misplaced and didn't do anything to move the story forward. I don't regret reading this book, but was pretty disappointed.

After waiting 8 years for her betroth Piers Brandon the Marquess of Grandville to return home from the Continent and finally marry her Clio has had enough. Clio has suffered rumors and ridicule for 8 long years now she is going to dissolve this farce of an engagement. She ask Piers brother Lord Rafe Brandon, occupation ex champion prize fighter to sign the dissolution of the marriage contract. He refuses and then proceeds to try and convince Clio to say betroth to his brother. He follows her to Twill castle. Clio's inheritance from her deceased uncle the Earl of Lynforte and gets her to agree to planning the wedding to his brother. Rafe and his trainer show all sorts of beautiful things to Clio to intice her to go on with the wedding. But to no avail. Eventually Rafe and Clio fall madly in love and have problems keeping there hands off each other. Well we know were this will end.

I liked all the secondary characters in the story the dog Ellington and Daphne, her husband Teddy and Phoebe, Clio and Daphne's younger sister. I was hoping there would be a twist to the story or a surprise like Rafe really being the Marquess, something to add more adventure to the story, but it wasn't to be. All in All I enjoyed reading Say Yes to The Marquess very much. I hope we get Phoebe's story next.

Clio has been waiting eight years for her fiance to come home and marry her. Piers is in no hurry, but his brother Rafe is determined that the wedding must go on. Rafe is a prizefighter and a rebel in regards to the aristocracy, but he wants to do right by his brother, and that means getting Clio prepared for her wedding.
However, Clio has changed her mind. She has inherited a castle and wants to start a brewery instead. Rafe would be a perfect partner - both for the brewery and for a wedding - if she can talk him into replacing his brother.
I've enjoyed this entire series, but perhaps I made a mistake in reading the last book first as that has Pier's story. This story might have been better as a novella as it seemed to drag on, then wrapped up too quickly. The chemistry between Clio and Rafe was just so-so for me; if any man had paid her attention after the long wait for Piers, I thought Clio would have fallen for him.
Still, as I said above, I enjoyed the series as a whole, and Ms. Dare's writing is always sexy and fun.
