My kids have loved the earlier three Mother Bruce books, so when I saw a new book coming out, I grabbed it on pre-order. I opened it but put it aside so I could experience it the first time with my kids. Well, as soon as they got back from school, they noticed the cover and insisted we read it. Very well!
This book is just as good as the others in the Mother Bruce series. The same silly and overly-friendly nice, the same grumpy (yet oddly caring bear, and the same little jokes that the adults will find amusing. I can already tell this will be one of our favorite Christmas books, and one of the few that will make the “year around” cut.
If you have the other books in the series, get this one. If you don’t have them, what are you waiting for? Get ‘em all! You and your kids will love them.
All I can say is, Poor Bruce! All he wants to do is sleep like a bear, but he is obligated by his “family” to do Christmasy things. By the end of the book he wants to skip Christmas next year. How is that uplifting and funny? I love the geese from the original book, but those mice drive me nuts! They are manipulative, don’t listen, and do what they want. I’m done buying Bruce books blindly.
When I first purchased Mother Bruce, I didn't realize how hilarious it would be and how much my kids would LOVE it. The art caught my eye and it seemed good when I skimmed it, so I bought it. I then picked up Bruce's Big Move and Hotel Bruce and wasn't too impressed, but they were still cute. Santa Bruce? Meh. There was only a couple of minor things that gave my family and me a giggle, but it's pretty much a flop. The theme is Bruce makes himself miserable so everyone else can be happy. At least in Mother Bruce he seemed to find some "joy" at the end on the beach with the geese. The mice really just add annoyance to the stories too. I don't think I'll buy another Bruce book if it's as depressing as this one, or has the mice. Bummer.
Ryan T. Higgins does it again! This is NOT one of those "favorite book character does a holiday book" thing. It is just as good as, if not better than the rest. My husband, a huge Bruce fan, says this is the best one yet! Its filled with everything we already love about Bruce and his family: Love, mistaken identity, and sarcasm. Don't miss this one!
