I should start by saying I really love critical role, and will admit I've only watched season 2, so was really looking forward to delving into the previous stories in this form. I love graphic novels and D&D and CR based seems to cup of tea.
Maybe if I had watched the show the familiarity with the characters would make this more enjoyable for me, but coming at it cold with fresh eyes and judging it purely as a graphic novel, I'm sorry to say I found it messy and not very gripping.
Still a big fan of CR but this was ok but nothing special. If you have watched all of Vox Machina (and not the Mighty Nein like me) then you may get far more from it than I did.
Only just hit the 50th episode of Vox Machina's journey and am already so incredibly invested in this amazing story. The comic is beautiful and I'm so happy to be able to learn more about their journey and support the amazing creators along the way! This would make a great gift for any one invested in Vox Machina's antics - though fair warning Percy is not present from the get go!
Bought this a while ago and have been trying to see if I could get a refund. I have an Amazon Fire 10 and the text is too small to read. Unlike other comix I have bought you cannot zoom and the pages just appear as is and you cannot scroll from panel to panel as you can in others.
Please don't take this bad review as in anyway a slight against Matt Mercer or any of the Critical Role crew who are amazing...
If you have really really good glasses you might be O.K.
A must for critters out there! This is the story if how Vox Machina met, essentially re-telling the Critical Role gang's antics up until we join them at the beginning of Ep1 of campaign 1.
The artwork is gorgeous and I love the look of the characters. Really colourful, clean lines. The writing is spot on as well as I can really link the characters with how they are portrayed by the CR team. Also I've really been waiting for this to come out hardcopy as althought digital is cool, I prefer having the real thing in my hand.
The art is beautiful, and well laid out, but the narrative is sort of all over the place. The pacing is weird and writing is wildly inconsistent. It was fine to read, but I doubt I'll really pick it up again. I'm glad it was on the cheaper side. Really, it's for completionists only.
Brought for my husband for Christmas. He seems to enjoy it, however not my kind of thing at all. Paperback book which seemed to be good quality. My husband said he enjoyed the story and would like the next volume for this Christmas.
