Namrata Ganti
5.0 out of 5 starsOne of the best Fantasy Fiction books in recent times!
Reviewed in India on 23 March 2019
I found this book while browsing through Instagram. There was a lot of posts about it and so much of praise. I knew that I had to read the book. It was the best decision I made.Samantha Shannon weaves a world of fantasy, magic and dragons, that makes for a very compelling read.

The story follows a great number of characters across various parts of the globe, mainly referred to based on the directions of North, South, East and West. Each direction has it's own set of countries, rulers and stories. The author weaves them all together slowly, unraveling parts of the mystery and introducing us to many people. As the story progresses, the reader has no choice but to keep going on. It is so well written, that the reader can imagine the scenes with ease. This helps to connect with the people and their surroundings. The story is filled with intrigue, mystery, love and magic. There is also some betrayal, a lot of hope, a strong sense of duty and bonds that grows among people from being united against a common enemy.

The story follows the lives of Ead, Sabran and Tané. Each have their own stories, their own secrets and a big role to play in this narrative. In addition, we have a lot of supporting characters who play pivotal roles in shaping the happenings in the story. The characters are strong and well crafted making it easy for the reader to connect with them and understand them. Each of the characters are tested when their faith comes into question, as well as when they are forced to take decisions that would change the course of their lives forever. This has been very beautifully depicted and the companionship between some of the characters is heart-warming.

I absolutely loved this book and the journey I took with the characters as they navigated their lives and finally moved towards the fight with an ancient enemy. I strongly recommend this book to all the readers out there! This is worth the read!

2.0 out of 5 starsThe only thing I enjoyed, was the cover.
Reviewed in India on 6 March 2019
Edit: Back in early 2019, when I received this book, I commented that it might just be the best fantasy-read of the year. I was, unfortunately, proven wrong. This isn't to say the book was poorly written or that it lacked world-building, my biggest issue with the book as I read it was that there was simply too-much world-building without anything actually ever happening.

We are introduced to a plethora of characters and worlds and continents but none of it seems to matter as in the grand scheme of things, everyone and everything seems to be running on the spot. I suppose the best way to express the opening chapters of this book is to say that there's a lot of activity but very little progress/achievement. Many of the characters seem to be the embodiment of medieval tropes with the only difference being the female-characters have taken over the more traditional and patriarchal roles bestowed upon male-characters. But again, they are let down in my opinion by the sheer drudgery of the plot.

I've been reading long enough to know that there are novels which pick-up in pace at a much later stage. I've read my share of books that began with a crawl but soon hit a stride that'd best Usain Bolt in a sprint. The Priory of the Orange Tree seems to be one such book, however, the only issue I have is that even the crawling first-act doesn't really offer me anything that'd make me want to persevere. So, in this instance, I believe it's more a case of me not being right for this book rather than the other way round. The cover-art is definitely one of the best I've ever seen, but as of right now, the cover is the only reason why I've retained this book in my library-shelves. And who knows, perhaps one day in the future I might finish reading it. And I'll re-edit this section again.

YOU are missing out if you don’t read this book now. I know, I know, it’s a big book, about 800 pages long and you must be intimidated but let me tell you, I was intimidated too! This is my first 800 pages book and I finished it in 5 days! I stopped sleeping (literally slept at 4AM in the morning for four days.) You won’t be able to sleep, you’d want to know what happens next. First 2 chapters can be a little confusing because it has the characters' intro but omg, after that! Still thinking of Ead and Subran. (you’ll know after you’ll finish it) :’(

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantabulous book

I was intrigued by below list and that's why picked this book.
🧡Dragons - You have one in cover
🧡 Feminist characters - Ead, Sabran , Tane ,Margret (Meg)
🧡 Divided kingdoms across sea - I love this type of stories.
🧡Orange tree - which has a black/crucial story :)

This book is about 800 pages , so I made myslef to read atleast 100 pages a day. Damn that was hard in the beginning cos story is slow.
Once the world is build and you know the characters well , the story's pace is set on fire.
Second half of the book was my favourite an fit was unputdownable.

I would recommend you to read the book because of below things.
💥Trust your friends
💥Your belief(religion) can be different , still you have your friends back
💥Everyone is fighting their own battle ,help to uplift each other
💥Dragons are different from wyrms - here wyrms are fire breathers and dragons /SeaDragon draw energy from water and they are holy beings.
💥Puzzles/poems - you will love when they are solved by the end of the book :D
💥 Inchumeons -( my Polar bears )- they are fast travelling and they talk🙈 . Yes dragons talk too.

Ashwini A.
5.0 out of 5 stars Dragons and over 800 pages, what more do you want?
Reviewed in India on 21 April 2019

So. Dragons.

No, really, without even knowing much about the books, the one thing that made me pre-order it was the fact that there were queendoms and there were dragons. I was sold. Then the reviews started pouring in and I was a bit intimidated by them because everyone seemed to love this one and rarely did anyone have anything truly bad to say about it.

I finally started the book with these fears in my mind and I needn’t have. I really needn’t have. There’s something about the writing, quick moving plots and multiple narratives throughout the book that really helped me love it. It’s very clear as you read along that Shannon had her canon done to a T. There wasn’t a lot left to wonder about and there weren’t a lot of glaringly obvious plot holes scattered in the book and with a book this size, I was very worried about that. Especially considering the fact that this is a standalone.

So, let’s dive into this one. Let’s go with dragons first because let’s be honest, a lot of the people probably put it on tbr just for the dragons. There’s such a good variety of dragons and what constitutes as a dragon. The different regions having different and polarizing opinions of said creatures. With east and west having such vastly different outlooks (with a somewhat valid reason), it was absolutely amazing to read and learn more about them as the pages flew by.

World-building. If you know me at all, you know I am weak for world-building in a fantasy novel/ series. So, I was very worried about it with this one because how much of it can you really stuff into one novel? Well, on this front, Samantha Shannon absolutely floored me. With people of different faiths, different geography and different traditions and lore, Priory still managed to make me feel very much as if I was living all of those and that was victory for the author, I think. It is so hard to make up a whole new world with its societies and religions and traditions and even though she doesn’t go too deep into them, there’s still enough to make me feel satisfied about it.

Pacing and plot! With a book that is almost 900 pages, I did wonder about the pace and the plot meeting that golden ratio. And admittedly, the first 150 pages do take a bit of a time but once you cross that, it all settles into a nice pace that is easy and exciting at the same time because things don’t stop happening in the book. It is also a multi-perspective so you are reading things that happening in multiple parts of the world with such distinct characters. That’s always a plus for me, multi-perspective when done right can be phenomenal and here, it is.

Characters! Gosh. Okay, so, first of all, I am trying to contain myself here because this one is already too long a review but I just have to talk about the characters. From Ead, who’s from the south and has tried to climb her way to become Queen Sabran’s close friends and learning something about herself as well as the queen to Sabran who has such a heavy legacy to carry on, who’s caustic and remote and cold but also insecure and in need of love. From Tane, a commoner who becomes a dragon rider but who’s one action could bring about her downfall to Loth who’s such a dear friend of Queen Sabran and who has had to face far more than his station in the court might have hinted at. Then there’s Roos, who’s absolutely not likeable but at the same time, he’s suffered enough in life to warrant some pity. He sometimes tries to be better but almost always the results end in disasters.

Relationships. This book has some of the best friendships I have seen in a while. They are not perfect but they are solid, they just are. There’s sisterhood that is almost enviable if I am being honest because these women, while they do have their own ambitions, they try to raise each other up and that was so good to read about. Then there’s the opposite sex friendships which are just that, friendships. I am afraid that I haven’t read enough books where opposite sex friendships are pure friendships so when I do stumble into them, I am just absolutely in love with them. There’s also a really touching lgbt romance in there as well which feels so organic and natural that I was almost surprised by it.

Overall, I would like to say that this is entirely enjoyable and immersive book and frankly, I couldn’t have expected anything better. I do have a couple of things I was bothered by. I wanted more Tane POV and I wish there was more expanded to cover the north as well. But those are tiny complaints compared to the rest of the positive points and frankly, if you are at all a fantasy fan, or someone who’d love to see some badass women being badass or if you wanna read about friendships and relationships in general then this is the book for you. Don’t be intimidated by the size, the pace of the book takes care of the fear.

One might feel intimidated by the thickness of this book but I can assure you that once you start reading this story, you'll never want it to end. The world that Samantha Shannon has built is so wonderfully crafted that I wanted to stay in it. Queens and Kings, legends and myths, feuds over religious views, magic with a new explanation and dragons! This book has everything for you to fall in love with it. And to top it all, the writing is simply marvelous. You won't find any difficulty in following the story and for help, maps and additional info are also included in the book! Go for it and buy this massive book! You're bound to love it. Especially if you're a fantasy lover.

I had already read the ebook before I ordered this one. Because I loved the book so much.
Another perfet Samantha Shannon book!
Must read for all high-fantasy lovers. It takes a lengthy build-up, but once you get the hang of it, it's so worth it!
I loved how it is a single book, yet the story is complete, it doesn't lack anything.
The thing I liked the most about his one was its underlying morality. The subtle lesson that in face of greater peril, we all need to join hands, come together, despite our differences, contradictory religious beliefs.
Waiting for the next book now, that is apparently set in the same universe as this one!

It was a fantastic book filled with dragons and badass female protagonists.
Nameless One is an old evil dragon who want to destroy humanity but he was defeated by Princess Cleolind Onjenyu(according to the Priory) or Galian Berethnet (according to the Virtudom). These are two religions practiced in West. 'Priory' is a top secret group of female mages who uses their power to protect the world. Their main job is to kill wyrms(dragons). It is believed that the bloodline of Galian Berethnet keeps the Nameless One at bay and when the bloodline will end the Nameless One will rise again and destroy the World.

So Priory sends Eadaz uq Nara, a mage in disguise as a lady in waiting to protect the Queen Sabran, the current Berethnet ruling the Virtudom.

In the East a different types of Dragons are revered by the humans. Humans consider the Dragons as God. This dragon are not your normal fire breathing kind but are water dragons. Peace loving creatures. In East our main Protagonist is Tane Miduchi a dragon rider. She is kind of selfish at starting but her nature is improved by constant tragedies.

This is one of the best Fantasy books I have ever read and would recommend every fantasy lover to read it.
