Absolutely amazing. Inspirational and clear information covering so many grounds of creativity; with acknowledgements of other artists in different countries and styles of art, mediums and subjects. Will also go well alongside Bert’s other book; Keys to Drawing. I genuinely believe these two books would be of huge value and importance in art schools and also for artists, professional or not. Art/creativity should be about having a fun time creating but also I think, achieving a product that you are happy with in the end. Practical information and practical demonstrations but also at the same time empowerment of the artist themselves to create whatever it is they wish to create. Bert installs that self belief.
I receieved this book today, and I've just sat down with a cup of coffee for half and hour and browsed through it, and I just have to write a review. I have a load of books on art technique, and this is completely different from any art book I've ever seen. It doesn't really deal with HOW to draw, more about WHAT to draw, and in ways that will create true art. It is inspirational, because it shows you how to inspire yourself. The whole of the first chapter is devoted to doodling - giving ideas as to how you could develop simple doodling into a work of art. I've never seen doodling in an art technique book before! The suggestions look great fun, and this sense of fun runs through the whole book. It inspires you to create your own individual style but gives you lots of ideas to stimulate that creation. If you want a 'drawing techniques' book, this isn't it - but there are hundreds of books out there that deal with basic techniques. I think the concept of this book is a work of genius, it's unique and exciting. Now, Mr.Dodson is a professional artist, and other artists are also featured in the book. They clearly have a lot of technical skill and if you try some of the more complex ideas suggested, your results may well not be quite as good as the examples shown. But, even so, I bet you'll enjoy the process of doing them! For those seeking inspiration to draw, I cannot recommend this book enough.
I thought that I would have a go at creative doodling and maybe some simple drawing. This book is good for that and it's well written and presented. If you really want to learn how to draw using a creative approach, this is a good book to learn from.
Really excellent book on drawing worth having on your book shelf. Lots of fun exercises which will inform your practice. Some exercises are things I have done casually without any real strategy; the author takes those ideas and made me look at them afresh opening them out into useable tools. Easy to read and follow; very well illustrated and although you can dip in anywhere, if your like me, you will end up going though the book chronologically as well :)
This book is full of tips to unlocking the potential for creative drawing. I have already started seeing things in a completely different way every time I look around. My mind is buzzing with ideas. It is easy to follow and try the exercises as you go through the book, but you can also jump forward to sections that are of particular interest. I have it on kindle and the only disappointment is not being able to zoom in on some of the pictures to see the detail. Highly recommend for someone like me who is pretty new to sketching.
This an excellent tool for both amateur and professional artist alike, we all go through a dry period, where try as we may inspiration doesn't flow, "Key to Drawing with Imagination" sets out, in small easily read chucks, tips, tools and exercises to stimulate the imagination.
