How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

3.0 out of 5 stars Really slow start

I have read most of this authors books and thoroughly enjoyed most of them, therefore having high hopes for this one
Damn it was slow to start. So much so I contemplated giving up. Thankfully I stuck with it and the 2nd half redeemed itself
It's not a new story, earth fleet gets ambushed, junior officers left to fend for themselves, learn the ropes the hard way, make good and bad decisions and in the end land on their feet

3.0 out of 5 stars Uneven Old Fashioned S.F.

This turned out to be a bit more stuffed in the pages than the book can hold. We have a sort coming of age for a new captain, a try at a bit of comedy, a nasty, annoying attempt at a battle of the sexes, a murder mystery, an alien hot chick in distress and more all wrapped up in a Star Trek sort of universe where all the beings are more or less human if not in form, then in function. Humans can even mate with at least a few of them.

The main issue is, besides too much in too few pages, the entire book is one hair on fire act with a few scenes. It's as if nobody sleeps at all but also seems to be ready for action forever. The one crew who does try to sleep gets attacked so never does - serves them right for doing what nobody else does.

The battle of the sexes isn't a battle but one side persistently behaving in a manner that no military would ever permit. It got tedious at first exposure and never let up to the point it grew to a major irritant. The mystery was solved in clumsily with the bad person obvious because the author, again clumsily, tried to lead the reader away from that person as a suspect.

It all leads up to a nasty infantry battle with the enemy led by an absurd villain that said more about the author's personal dislikes than a believable enemy. Well, we have a great setup for the next installment. The ending is a good combo of wrap up but also a lead into the next volume.

I hope the author hires a copy editor to remove phrases such as 'hair-brained' and others of that like.

I liked the book and I may read the next one in the series. I skipped some of it because the author got to wordy.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's okay. A little chopped in places but a fair read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Flawed but Enjoyable

This a perfectly fine weekend read for some mindless action (really, don't think too hard)
It's generally fast paced and quite acceptable as a Amazon Unlimited title, but...

- All the characters are basically generic stereotypes. Serviceable, but don't expect any type of character development or nuance

- There are plot holes so huge, they require the arrival of a literal deus ex machina robot to fix

Don't hesitate to read if your just looking for some light action, but don't expect anything deeper

3.0 out of 5 stars 1950 style universe
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 26 July 2021

The style of the plot is a 1950 type sci-fi book. The science is bad and the plot it's a universe full of aliens all next door to Earth. The author has split the plot between a murder mystery and space combat. I read the book to the end and bought the next in the series but this is only for light reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining if a bit disjointed
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 6 June 2020

The premise is fairly simple. Little earth more or less just into space, good aliens, bad aliens, suspicious aliens. The action good. And for once while somewhat backward, the tellurian technology is not out right hopelessly outclassed. The protagonist is an executive officer-cum-captain (but doesn't want to be), thrust into the captain's chair by events. Some peculiar discontinuities that may or may not be addressed in a second book. As it stands there's a monumental continuity problem that will require considerable plotting to clear up, or careful sidestepping. It's an entertaining read though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Acceptable Star Trek inspired story
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 10 August 2021

No getting around it, this universe is eerily familiar to any Star Trek fan. As are the plot holes, the lazy science, and many of the stereotypical characters. But Star Trek worked because it was fun, and for the most part, so is this.

I’ve missed this sort of story, with dogfights, missiles, and aliens. Could’ve done without some of the subplots but I really enjoyed it.
