To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
The book is just okay. If one owns other cook books for kids from the America’s Test Kitchen, the recipes in this book will be very familiar. It is quite disappointing that such an institution would simply recycle the same recipes in their cookbooks. I’d expect a bit more. However, some of the experiments grabbed my daughter’s interest.

America's Test Kitchen is a trusted source for recipes and culinary endeavors. I'm sure the recipes included in this book will turn out exactly as stated, but there are no photos of either the prep or the finished product. That's kind of a turnoff with a children's book. Also, some of the "recipes" consist of making a sandwich or compiling a cheese plate, not exactly thrilling science or cookery.
There are no photos or drawings for the science experiments either. In fact, the entire book is text heavy and not very inviting. The experiments and games are okay, but nothing special. There are takes on Mad Libs, I Spy, word searches and other popular games, but also too many multiple-choice "tests," which right away would repel a lot of kids who get enough of that in school.
Some of the book's text is difficult to read -- light blue text on a light blue background, or green on green, or white text on a dark background. The font size is very small. All in all, the book feels and looks like a textbook. There is a lot of good information, but I don't see a child engaging with it unless s/he is intensely interested in food science.
