This is a great story of Empires, space pirates, aliens and war. I really enjoyed reading it and I found myself unable to stop! For these reasons I have given it five stars.
However, I do have to ask why the book (which is not cheap!) is so poorly edited? I assume the publishers are using some sort of digital technology as there are no typos but instead entire words are missing! It is a little annoying when reading to have to insert a word in the middle of a sentence. Another problem (maybe the same problem?) is that for some words a predictive text seems to have been used and an inappropriate word has presumably been substituted for the one the author chose.
Publishers, please just read through what you are selling to us and correct it before charging a lot of money for a substandard product!
The marketing material suggests "Rich Characters", and yet the author introduces (and describes) characters based on their skin colour. Or their sexuality. Because that's far more important than, well... their actual character!
100's of years in to the future and they're still talking about colonialism? Perhaps they still have access to Twitter aboard the ship too.
As for the content outside of the identity politics - the story itself is paced well enough. It's interesting and tense in parts, but some repetition in the writing and the other nonsense just detracts.
A fantastic read. Sharp, well-paced and very well written. Great value for money and frankly, worth three times the price. I had actually started reading the second book and realized i was devouring pages like I had found the holy grail or something, that I had to put it aside to come back and give the first one a review. This series will put Mr Stewart right up there with great names in the military space opera genre.
Its got a great balance across the board. There's plenty of action but also enough development. Lots of science and tech but not enough to get you bogged down in minutiae.... and there's plenty of characters, but you never really feel like you're forgetting any of them or that you're being swamped by new introductions.
I am really, really glad I gave this a try. Gonna have me a great weekend reading!
So I found this book in a stellaris forum. It's well written good story doesn't get to caught up with too many explanations of how stuff works.. but that in itself works really building the start of a great galactic story. On to the second book now.
For the first few chapters of this book I thought, good but fairly routine. Then the twists started and it became the sort of sleep stealer, unputdownable novel I like. Characters filled out as did the story as it switched between protagonists. If you enjoy your SF try this out. I can imagine this making a cracking blockbuster movie. Can't wait for the follow up (scheduled for winter 2016).
I'm an admirer of Glynn Stewart's work and am on the preview list for his books. However, I purchased this as I hadn't got around to reading the preview copy.
This has been my favourite military sci-fi series so far (though I am keenly awaiting the second instalment of PP Corcoran's K'Tai series). I loved the story from start to finish. The characters, the premise of the story, and how it unfolded were all spot on. The sequels have been excellent additions to the storyline as well. I can easily imagine this as a tv series or film trilogy. Netflix are you listening?
Wow! Great Space Opera, great Science Fiction, un-put-downable! I don't have enough superlatives for this book! i am a voracious reader of science fiction and fantasy and this book ticked every single one of my boxes. I loved it and cannot wait for the sequel, although this might be hard as there are very few loose ends left from this novel - one of the many things i loved about it.
How to do space opera, with all the standard ingredients yet make it new and highly entertaining! Admittedly the ending was obvious fairly early in the book but instead of detracting from the story it left me pleasantly wondering how the author would get there. I don't often award 5 stars but this really deserves it. I was thoroughly engaged and can't wait for the next one.
A strange twist on the friendly alien theme that makes a pleasurable storyline. Thankfully, there are no baiting "what happens next?" to keep you reading. It is simply a well written and well structured plot. I couldn't put it down and cannot wait to read the next book in the series.
