How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

2.0 out of 5 stars gooey gay politics ruined a potential good storyline
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 13 July 2022

I'm not interested in gay politics so I was bored stupid by the luvvy dovey nonsense that ruined this story. Space operas don't need a gooey love element in them and few sci-fi authors make it front and centre of their tales. But the constant chatter between the male captain and navigator littered with "love", "hon", "darling", etc was tedious and over-done.
The concept of a war veteran (going on pacifist) going up against an organised crime syndicate, in a slightly better armed freighter, was quite good but the holes in the plot were large and plentiful. Armed with hacking software that could do virtually anything to a space station or vessel (take control of the doors, rig the security cameras, shut down engines, raid data banks), it seemed totally ridiculous that EB was unable to obtain the Nova maps that were key to the story. The only thing his magical hacking software could NOT access were Nova maps?
Although set in the same universe as the 'Conviction' books (EB is an ex-Apollo Nova fighter pilot, from Kira Demirci's 303s) the planning and execution of the military actions are laughable compared to EBs Nova pilot colleagues. EB has a more 'cross-your-fingers' approach to warfare. And it takes a weird type of stupid to walk into so many traps as EB and his crew did.
There is a sequel book, but I won't be buying it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Beginning

This first book was entertaining and engaging, with well defined characters and a multithreaded plot which is suitably resolved by the end of this book. There is one short line at the end which leads into the next installment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly readable

I've mentioned that I'm not a huge fan of Glynn Stewart. He tends to over-emphasize some aspects of his tale that I feel would be better set aside as they often don't really enhance the plot or the characters. But I do understand why he does it.

However, in this spinoff from the Scattered Stars: Conviction series, we actually get a somewhat decent character in EB. He's not all that good. He's a bit of a coward, and more broken than I think makes for a truly interesting character, but when he's pushed into a corner he stands up for the right in an entertaining way.

This is a low four star tale. It has flaws, but was still interesting and definitely leaves me interested in the possibilities in the next book in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Beyond is Dark and Unforgiving

Please read the author’s cautionary note before reading. Some of the subject matter is very disturbing.

The Beyond, the outer reaches of human space where the strong, the clever and the quick survive - until they meet someone stronger, quicker or more clever. This is where EB flies his freighter, trying to earn a living for himself and his crew. Each of the crew is running away from something. EB is running from Brisingr assassins who have targeted every ace in the Apollo 303 Nova Strike Group. He is hoping to lose himself in the Beyond. That’s not all EB is running from.

This is a great start to a new series in the Scattered Stars universe. A story where a freighter captain and crew come to the realization that you can’t run forever and find something worth fighting and possibly dying for. Nice plot twists, great characters and plenty of action in this dark story from the Beyond where the worst and best of humanity struggle to survive.

I received an ARC for my review and I purchased my own copy to support the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun space exploration story

A small trading ship, a small crew with numerous explosive secrets, danger between the stars, and space dads. What else could you want? This is a story with humor and heart. I will definitely read the next book in the series.

I really enjoyed reading this one, I had already read other books in the scattered stars universe and this one was a great twist to the story. Will be looking forward to the next books.

A book full of characters that are very real and either war or just plain evil. The twists are well constructed and very believable. Hopefully the next book will not be long in coming

2.0 out of 5 stars somewhat poor

I normally like Glynn’s novels and yet this one was hard to read, I’m not quite sure what makes it so, it hits all the usual beats and while the subject was grim it honestly wasn’t explored enough for in such a way as to disgust, alarm or honestly elicit any reaction perhaps that’s why it wasn’t interesting or enjoyable. As of late I’ve seen Glynn address social issues more and more this could be considered laudable yet as I read his latest works I’ve come to realise it’s only skin deep, a Twitter, social media approach to lgbtq and race issues that neither understands nor seeks to understand us (though people in the future more or less not caring is a nice touch) it’s through a similar lens that human trafficking and exploitation is depicted in this novel, Glynn tells us it’s bad and why but the impact is seldom explored in the characters and where it is there is no conflict, no extreme trauma and little effect on the characters actions it feels only skin deep. I understand it’s hard to research and discuss to explore what people who struggled with these circumstances go through but if you cannot or have trouble expressing it, you maybe shouldn’t write about it.
