"Maa, tum to kitni achhi ho! Kyun nahi hum gareebon ko unk haal pe chhod deti?" This is the dialogue still etched to my memory ,having read the book in my pre-teen years in Hindi.Ironically,my mother too enjoys Swami's plight in the dialogue equally. To let know the readers, this dialogue Swami weeps out when his dad decides to make him study on a holiday on his mother's egging.
The first book of the author that I read. Was a joy to read! Was quite sad when I finished it because I didn't want the book to end. We see the world through the eyes of a child in this sweet book. Swami, the main character of the book, isn't a goody goody kid. He's a normal kid, a bit selfish, and this story is pretty realistic. It may have very well been anyones childhood! Makes for a very good read.
I just can't get enough of Narayan. As Graham Greene felt, I also found a second home in Narayan's beautiful fictional world of Malgudi. And, once you are into it, you just won't want to come out of it. A rendezvous with Malgudi's natives will make you feel like that you've know them long before.
Reading the book (Swami and Friends) quite moved me and transports to the children's world before independence, but many an incident related me of the childhood days that feels nostalgic. I couldn't narrate what, and all, but I am adding it to my favorite list of books, and it reproduced the cheer of reading Ruskin bond's the room on the roof.
There are some books which take you to another world and make you lure and explore it. This book takes you back to pre independence era and make yourself bound to these characters. The world of swami is something which cannot be miss and afyet reading this book, I discovered why RK Narayan is regarded one of the greatest writers of Indian Literature. His story and his character are class apart
This is an amzing book featuring the adventure of Swami, a enthusiastic, energetic yet abiding with his father, showing his life with lots of up and down. This book reflects the real meaning of friendship and brotherhood. Its totally a U/A book. Must read.
Book is great but I have one issue to report .. kindly provide bookmarks with the books as they hardly cost anything and are great help...not asking for anything fancy, any simple one will do so please keep that in mind..these simple things provide the greatest joys😌
Malgudi a imaginary village which we all wanted to visit in real life. This actually brings back all the childhood memories that we would have had somewhere in the back of our mind. The stories are crisp and simple to understand. The Doordarshan 's 90 TV show was based on this. Worth buying a copy of this beautifully written book by R.K.Laxman
