This is the first time when I am reading a Kavita Kane's title.

But very dissapointed with the content. Evryone knows the Mahabharata. So what one can expect from this title is that a detailed perspective from the main character, Satyavatis's point of view with rich linguistic creativity. Rather we hv got some very ordinary english narrative.

There are many silly spelling mistakes which is the very proof of that someone is in hurry to make some bucks out of it. How come a book has been published without having detailed review and proof.

In several pages the plot has been lost inbetween lines.
Moreover she herself is confused in portraying the charecter of Satyavati.

This is the story of Satyavati, born to a king, abandoned by him, who grew up as a fisher girl, then turned into a cunning lady willing to go any extent to become a queen and safeguard her progeny. The grand matriarch of the Kuru family, instrumental in starting the events leading to the battle of Kurukshetra. The story shows Mahabharata in a new light, the back story of one of the most important characters- Bhishm who was born as Devavrat, his life story and the role of Satyavati in it.
This book is mythology at it's best with exhaustive information and several intricacies minutely connected.
A must read for everyone.

The story takes you in a journey way before Mahabharat. Before Bhism was born and from there we follow these characters whose every step taken will help in make DEVABRAT as BHISM. We see the story from various point of view but THE FISHER GIRL, SATYAVATI, is the protagonist or one could say antagonist, which I could say as I really hated her.

I love BHISM. His portrayal was beautiful. His love for Amba made me swoon over him. However, the more I loved Bhism, the more I hate Satyavati. Of course, the Author intended that.

Beautiful cover and very well written. I felt for Devavrat (Bhishm), and in a way felt Amba's passion and agony too. The author has made him sound so handsome that I couldn't stop imagining him! As for Satyavati, the fact that she keeps 'her' dynasty going at any cost, even when the bloodline doesn't belong to the Kurus anymore, is an irony well brought out by one of her daughters-in-law, Ambika. While Satyavati is the ultimate epitome of ambition and ruthlessness, her husband, King Shantanu, is a perfect alter ego - an epitome of a lust-ridden and weak willed man. Another character who was wonderfully etched to life, was the King's second brother, Bahlik, who gives him such a tongue-lashing, for ruining his own son's life. He predicts the doom of Hastinapur and his dynasty and that is exactly was happens in the future. Despite, having three sons, his lineage dies out.

ever since I have started reading Kavita Kane's books, I have become a fan of hers. in January, I came to know that a new book of hers was released.....and finally in March. I finally laid my hands on it.
first of all, I would like to thank the author for providing me information about her beautiful work and for giving me an opportunity to give an honest opinion on the book. mythology is a critical subject and more critical is it's retelling as if you do not know the tale properly and cannot narrate it in a gripping way then the reader would not find it interesting. I feel it is just a cup of tea for Kavita Kane for retelling mythology.
the book is the story of Satyavati and along-side bhisma told in a new twisted and poetic way. the book focuses on lesser-known characters like uparichar Vasu- biological father of Satyavati, dasharaj- foster-father of mastyagandha, amba- princess of Kasi and nemesis of bhisma and finally the most beautiful of all Satyavati or mastyagandha or yojanagandha or daseyi, herself.
the best part of the book is its beauty in language and gripping narrative. I felt that the beauty of the language and strong vocabulary of Kavita mam makes the book, truly a "masterpiece". one cannot put down the book if you have started once. although the book is of 400 pages, you would at least two days if you are a fast reader- for completing the book, for you need to understand each line along with its difficult words.
for the narration, it is just mind-boggling. the way she captures each character and emotions in her pen would leave you enthralled.
the book is a fiction and it totally stands for its genre. you would read new tales like the panchals- the tale of ugrayudh paurav- the uncle of dhrupad, the matsyas- the tale of mastya and Vasu- the real family of Satyavati and the epilogue- the death of Satyavati.
another perk of the book is its philosophy. you would see a lot of beautiful ideas of philosophy hidden within tales. the way the fights- that are also metaphor like the blows of swords are compared blows on heart and mind and the other scenes are explained truly captures the full attention of the reader.
the ending is just mesmerising, the way the author makes it a conclusive one by explaining how Satyavati accepts the consequences of all her choices and does not believe in fate and finally she enters into ganga and dies by drowning-realising all her mistakes makes it hit the right note.
the book shows three phases of the woman- the first as a woman who used lust as her weapon, the second as a woman who has a cold and emotionless heart and finally a woman who has realised all her mistakes and is totally broken down by her choices. the book totally is a worth reading. and if you have not read it, it is totally your huge loss.
overall the book is in simple words a "masterpiece". the best of all of Kane's books. a perfect tapestry of myth and imagination.
imaginative. intrigue. intense.
I would recommend the book to all the mythology lovers and to everyone who loves fiction and I am sure they would love the gripping story.

Emotional Rendering of the Pivotal Character of Mahabharata

Mahabharata is an epic and this book is an emotional rendering of the pivotal character of Mahabharata. The book is crisp and to the point. In this massive epic, its easy to digress given the abundance of incident, but the author has avoided all that.

She has brought out the authoritarian as well as the soft side of Satyavati, a blend which probably catapulted her as the central character of Mahabharata, ultimately leading to the great battle. At places myths have been painted with a more practical approach.

A very gripping read and definitely recommended. More because mainstream Mahabharata speaks very little of this character.

This is the first book I am reading from the author Kavita Kane. I was referred to read this and honestly I am not at all impressed by it. The story is the events that lead to the greatest epic ever Mahabaratha. Satyavati, a wronged fisher girl, whose ambitions for throne set some horrendous things in motion that would lead to the greatest war on the soil of India.
This particular topic has been tried and tested numerous times and frankly Ms Kane, I thought, would bring something refreshing to the table. But it was the same story told in the most boring and tiring way. The narrative is uneven, at times it's rapid and at times you just wish to skip pages. The story is indeed a work art fantasy that the author tired to create but failed miserably. The melodrama was intense and boring at various parts and the storytelling was laboriously pitiful. I had high expectations from this with the hype surrounding it but it's a complete failure.

if you are Mythology lover you must read this one. this book is based on one centre character of Satyavati From MahaBharat. and how her destiny changed the whole story of Mahabharat and you would be left thinking what the story could have turned if Satyawati (Matsyaghandha) have taken an another route to construct his future and ambition.
was she the Villain ? or was she a Hero ? but she is the Pioneer of The great Battle of Mahabharat. or was she mere a reason to blame everything on her. in any case she is the strongest and intelligent character of that era and one must read to know about her.

It's a beautiful written novel...which overview another different aspects of mahabharata underlining satyavati character from abandoned princess to Fisher girl to Queen...though book has a good language...and has attractive facts but the book lack at certain point where the reader might feel more emphasis on bhishm rather than satyavati making the book more precisely a pre Story of mahabharata but the book holds you because of its characters...and language...I had loved karna wife...little disappointed with dis one...
