To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
It seems I've bought a "General Press" edition from India which is the original version of 1918, not one of the much later and better known revisions by White. If you'd like to write English in the best American style of 1918, that's ideal. For the rest of us, this particular edition is a waste of paper.
This book is a clear copyright infringement. This is NOT Strunk & White's Element of Style. It is a copy of some of the original - with the alleged 'copyright' registered to an Indian company, dated 2019 - that specializes in the theft and republication of previously published works.
I find it absolutely appalling that Amazon allows this sort of theft to go on in its catalog. It will be returned, and I will be notifying the copyright holder.
I read some critical reviews before hand but wasn’t quite sure to believe them because I had heard that this book was highly suggested for writers. However, this printing of the publication is perhaps not the best one. I actually stopped reading at page 16. The examples are not clearly identified as to whether they are wrong or correct examples of punctuation. And the rules are not explained thoroughly enough that they become convoluted and confusing. They wrote in the introduction that this was more of an overview and to look into further reading more in-depth discussions, but if you’re not going to do a good job writing an overview, why bother? I’m sure this content was important when Strunk first write it, but perhaps this is a lazy adaptation of his work for the modern age.
To add to the issues that others have mentioned, the book has an entire section entitled "Exercises on Chapters II & III" which gives you example paragraphs and sentences with errors with which to test what you've learned. Irritatingly the book provides so answer key or way to be sure you are correct in which errors are present. I will likely be simply throwing this book away.
