5.0 out of 5 starsEVERY SINGLE person must read this book to understand the importance of their mothers
Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on 3 May 2021
Gosh! This book really deserves a groundbreaking review, for it geometrically expands for anybody, the importance of understanding the sacrifices made by our mothers all throughout our lives.

This book has the potential to drive one to throw away little deeds of dismissal of our parents that we may be so so busy committing every single day, to reserving ourselves more time and space for deeds that we think are more important for us. The book has the potential to grab you by the collar and help you realise how foolishly you are chasing things that may never measure up into what will ultimately fulfill you, while the clock ticks away precious (dearly precious) hours of moments you could have basked in the glory of stepping into the mind, heart and soul of the only person (your mother....for many it is also our fathers...yes!) whose sole intention has and always been to see you live blissfully and happily, regardless of how much grumpiness you may have unloaded on her.

The book is groundbreaking in its ability to drive one nuts about the jaw-droppingly little degree of what we really really are regularly aware of the sacrifices our parents are making for us, asking for literally nothing in return.

When his life crashes, Chick spends one day with his dead mother, learning (in rewind) about the lushness of the angelic persona that she silently ushered him with all his childhood, to finally lose all his grip on that talking image of her to the stars. He realises this foolery and tears filled his soul.

The amount of impact this book has had on my life is indescribable!
I love you my mom, so much!
I have been dropping nonsensical, self-entered stuff just to be around her all the time....this is the overarching shift that has happened within me after reading this masterpiece. Same happening with father! Remember, parents have the purest form of love for you. Others will have returns-tagged! :)

I spend less time on me and more of losing myself in learning about life from my parents now!

Thank you Mitch really!
Please read this book if your parents are still alive!

Three books so far have made me so deeply aware of the beauty of parents--- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Father Figure by James Cudney and then, this!

Though it was a nice read, it felt like the father-son part of 'The 5 People You Meet In Heaven' has been elaborated in a whole book. So the book just seemed ok, when you have read the above mentioned book before it. The ending felt a little bit expected.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a Great Read
Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on 20 April 2020
I had high expectations from this book particularly after reading the Author's "Tuesdays with Morrie". I was really impressed by the way life lessons were presented in "Tuesdays with Morrie". But "One More Day" was rather ordinary and confusing. The author has brought in a ghost to make the reader realise/understand the delicacies of family relationships. The story has been told in a complicated way and the ordinary reader is likely to get confused. One lesson is definitely learnt: Not all books of a famous writer are of similar quality.

3.0 out of 5 stars Misleading back cover description

This is my third Mitch Albom book. Like the other two, this one is brilliantly written and is a page turner to the end. However, the review by James McBride on the back cover is very misleading – at least it was for me. He says, among other things, that the book “will make you smile“. It did not make me smile at all. I found the story to be excruciatingly painful and horribly depressing. Yes, like Mitch albums other books, there is some redemption at the very end. But the pain of it, and the fact that I found nothing to like about the main character, makes me regret reading it at this time of my life and with all that I’m presently going through. But again, Mitch is such a compelling writer, I couldn’t put it down. I am not trying to tell you to not read the story. But if you are a sensitive person and going through a difficult period in your life, this may not be the best choice for you. Just be aware of what you are getting into.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Important Message, but needs a new twist
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 5 October 2006

"For One More Day" is a good read. It's simple and sweet and Albom's continually repeated message about viewing life from different perspectives is probably the most important lesson any of us can learn.

In the novel Charles "Chick" Benetto is a middle-aged, former small time baseball player and alcoholic. He's recently divorced and attempts a suicide spurred by his daughters wedding (one in which Chick is purposefully uninvited to). Much to Chick's surprise, he goes to his childhood home and meets his mother...the surprising part is that Pauline (his mother) has been dead for some time. In true "It's a Wonderful Life" fashion, Chick with the help of his mother, is allowed to review his life's choices, but more importantly his perspective on the choices that he and those he loves have made.

As much as I enjoyed "Tuesdays with Morrie" and "The Five People you meet in Heaven", Albom needs to change his focus on death and enlightenment being synonymous. While you can't help but become a bit weepy at Chick's revelations and subsequent enlightenment, it's hard to escape the feeling that you've read/watched/heard this story before. This "ghost story" is a sweet one, but in my opinion should be Alboms last. He is a wonderful writer and has an extremely important message about family, priorities and most importantly that happiness in life absolutely requires that we see life through different perspectives. I for one love the message, but wish Mitch Albom would use a different story next time to teach it.

All in all for those that enjoyed his first two books, "For One More Day" is definitely worth reading and a nice way to spend an afternoon. However, I hope Mitch comes up with a different twist next time in order to send his important message.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bought new, but received a slightly used one.

The only reason why I am not putting a 1 star is because I love this story and the author. However, I chose the "Buy New" option and instead received a used one. I could no longer return it as I needed it for a book exchange and do not have sufficient time to re-order. Embarrassing that I have to explain this to the recipient of the book, and incredibly disappointed that I even had to (explain).

3.0 out of 5 stars A Mother Sees.........
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 21 May 2017

I had to read the other reviews before sitting down to write mine. I'm glad to see there were others who also weren't bowed over by this story. Yes, it is an endearing mother/son story. And yes I do believe there isn't anyone out there who wouldn't want one more day with someone with which they feel the need to make amends. But, I really don't need to read about it. I like more ghost in my story. I could say I'm sorry I just didn't find this book to my liking, but who exactly would that apology be going out to? Maybe the ghost, because she is the mother. And what mother isn't the glue that holds a family together. She is the ghost even before she becomes the dearly departed who allows those she loves to shine their own light at it's brightest. So, yes, sorry, mom, the book is just OK in my view.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mother-son relationships, regrets and redemption
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 11 August 2011

This was a beautiful story about mother-son relationships, although it makes a statement for all parent-child relationships. It was remarkable the way Charley was able to think back on this life and reflect on the times his mother sacrificed and put him first as well as the times he put himself first, forgetting about his mother. I think he called it "times my mother stood up for me" and "times I didn't stand up for my mother". The book is basically about how we recognize as adults how we didn't appreciate all our mothers did for us at the time...but how could we? We don't realize what a special love a mother has for her child until we're grown and have either gained life experience or had children ourselves.

In this book, Charley has the unique opportunity to have one more day with his mother and to tell her all he wanted and needed to say before she died. That's a fantasy for all of us who have lost a loved one, I guess. I'd have given this book another star or two if the author had perhaps written a bit more. It was rather simple and could have used more depth.
