5.0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Killig Rommel!

Read this book in 2008, and its a standalone book about WWII in North Africa and a decisive battle.

This tale is set in the years AD 1942-1943, in North Africa with Field Marshall Rommel and his Afrika Corps.

Against Rommel the British are finding it hard to stop these Germans, their 8th already routed, and now in a desperate attempt they will try a new tactic.

With the war in the balance, the British will develop a plan to create a small force behind enemy lines, and that force will create a blow in Rommel's attack.

This force called the Long Range Desert Group will succeed in their endeavour to strike successful blows to Rommel's army, and their exploits will become known as stuff of legend.

This story is based on real events, and it is brought to us in a lifelike and warlike manner by the author, and where individuals and armies in this war of life and death are superbly pictured in their struggles and actions, and that all for the sake of freedom.

Highly recommended, for this is a fantastic book about the decisive setback of Rommel in North Africa, and that's why I like to call this masterpiece: "A Fabulous Killing Rommel"!

This isn't my usual genre, but I really enjoyed reading it. I found the story well told, even if the style was a bit odd at times, there's a bit of 'old fashioned' about the English, writing style and turn of phrase which takes a bit of getting used to.

I read this on a Kindle, I'm sure it would have better as a paper book, as the reader really needs the maps provided. I took one look at these at the start and realised they wouldn't be any use to me at that scale, and so struggled on without them. My lack made the story hard to follow, but didn't overly spoil it

SPOILER ALERT
It's been a while since I've felt so involved with what I'm reading and with the people in the story. I felt as excited as Mr Pressfield was, to actually 'meet' Collie at the end. Well done.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jolly good show!

This is a great book that tells the story of the Long Range Desert Group through a fictional mission to kill Rommel. It is a masterclass in setting the scene, authentic dialogue and contemporary points of view. The description is absolute first rate, you really think you are out there, and the story is eminently believable. It's a fantastic fantastic story, and the touch at the end where the British troops actually meet Rommel is out of this world. Of course it also feeds into the Rommel Myth as well, but that's just what good fiction should do.
And for an American author to get an absolutely perfect authentic British feel is doubly impressive.
So why did it only get four stars?
Well, the novel is built on the premise that the main character is a struggling author, who publishes a friend's manuscript, and who also just happens to be married to a publisher's daughter.
Which is all well and good, but for the struggling indie author, such as myself, it strikes a sour note, and probably founded in jealousy that I'm not married to a publisher's daughter, harrumph!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good retelling of the North Africa campaign with a twist

A very good retelling of the North Africa campaign with a twist. Far from being jingoistic (as unfortunately the latest spate of English popular history books predominantly turn out to be (Brexit oblige?), perpetuating national founding stories without any critical distance at all and very rarely widening the historical horizon beyond the episode), the story shows a soldier's true emotions, close to those WWII soldiers of my entourage showed when the subject of the war turned up (that would be Luxembourg, which has had soldiers coerced into fighting for the Germans as well as others having rejoined the Grand Duke in his London exile). It is therefore universal in its scope, not tailored in any way to serving a particular country's glory. This might have to do with the fact that Mr Pressfield is American and recounts his English father's war memoirs - once removed in a way. But I believe that it has just as much to do with his personality as an author.
Steven Pressfield writes with a great honesty which shows through in all his books, I think. His somewhat terse writing style I find eminently readable and corresponds well to the themes recurrent in his books - those that I have read, that is - have not read any of his how-to-succeed-in-life books, although his personal honesty even in that (mine)field cannot be doubted.
Warmly recommend this read to anyone interested in war in general and WWII in particular.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pressfield writer and historian of genius

Us historic fiction fans are blessed just now. Cornwell, Iggulden, Scarrow and Low to name a few of the great writers in this genre. All of whom write terrific and exciting stories, however, good as they are I am always very aware they are works of fiction, even if based on actual events.

Pressfield is different in that he actually makes you believe for a time you are actually there and that this is exactly how events unfolded. He has a rare gift for illustrating war and conflict in all it's technicolour actuality! Heroism, yes but also tragedy, futility, horror, guilt, terror, nobleness, comradeship, humanity and inhumanity.
It speaks volumes for this book that I sat and read the epilogue with a lump in my throat and tears pouring down my face, and I'm usually a bit of a souless old git!

The story itself is remarkable. Partly because it describes the incredible endeavours of the SAS and the Long Range desert group. Men sent deep into the desert way behind enemy lines to raid Axis airbases, report troop and armour positions, for weeks on end and under constant attack. But also because it is the story of Commonwealth troops, New Zealanders, British, Aussies and South Aftricans and yet told by an American! and brilliantly told too! We are so used to watching/ reading about America winning the war single handed that Commonwealth troops even getting a passing mention is rare let alone being the stars of the show! In fact the only protagononists from the USA are the Chevvy trucks the LRDG used!

The story is also as much about the brilliant Generalship and humanity of the German General Rommel as it is the LRDG themselves, with several descriptions of the great mans exploits and his incredible demonstations of mercy, humanity and fair play.

A great read that I would recommend to anyone with an interest in WW2 and in particular the desert theatre. It does read a little like a history text in the early and mid stages (hence just missing the full 5 stars) but as I mentioned earlier, had me blubbing like a 3 year old who's lost their teddy, by the end!

Steven Pressfield oustanding work!

5.0 out of 5 stars Has the ring of truth

Steven Pressfield is a superb reasearcher with a real feel for time and place. I have enjoyed all of his books to date. This one is a cracker. It has the ring of truth, because it is a novel woven around real events and facts. Mr Pressfield is a true craftsman in the best possible way. You LIVE the story while he is telling it. And this story is not simply action all the way. Human feelings and emotions are also portrayed. The Brits are not all heroes and the Germans are not all "baddies". Like the soldiers of the time who fought with him and against him, Steven Pressfield shows respect for Erwin Rommel, a great soldier who happened to be on the "wrong" side.

If Mr Pressfield never writes another word, his works will live on and this is one of his best. Chapeau!!!

Initially I was a little uncertain about "Killing Rommel"; it read like something written in the postwar 50s... it felt dated. The language was quaint and the characters a little too public-school British as though just come down off the cinema screen during a showing of "Brief Encounter" or "In Which We Serve". I was brought round by the thrill of travelling behind enemy lines in the harsh environment of the North African desert. This was the real hero of the book, that (cliche) unforgiving, uncaring waterless landscape where any minor delay brings about hours of struggle and desperation, made more dangerous by the pursuit of the seemingly superior Afrika Korps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Pressfield!

Having been an avid reader of Steven Pressfield's earlier works (Gates of Fire etc.) I don't mind admitting that I came to `Killing Rommel' with some trepidation. Could Pressfield transfer his fantastic knack for story-telling and historical moment from the ancient world to WWII and the North African campaign? I needn't have worried! `Killing Rommel' is a fantastic read - utterly gripping with Pressfield's trademark attention to detail and historical evocation.

Its clear that Pressfield writes as a soldier. His empathy with his characters shines through; almost as if he - and you - are there with them on the page.

`Killing Rommel' is Pressfield at his best. I usually wait until fictional works are published in paperback, but I was glad I purchased the hardback edition. Pressfield is one of a small handful of writers who can't publish their books quickly enough in my opinion! More please!

Authentic account of the many almost insuperable difficulties of desert operations. Just keeping the vehicles moving was amazing. Bonds between comrades and honour towards the enemy apparent throughout a vivid story by an decent, modest and brave soldier.
