It was cute, romantic and delightful. My favorite character was Gage. I was happily engrossed in it and when I finished, I wanted more.

First, I only wanted Liberty with Hardy. Then Gage came along, and I was torn. It was an emotional roller coaster for me. I'm still not sure but damn. What a journey.

Liberty's first love returns just as she is getting over him with Gage, the son of her new employer. Gage shows his love by letting her see Hardy and work out her feelings. Trouble ensues, but no spoilers here. This is a novel with a fully realized back story and you definitely care for Liberty and her family.

Sugar Daddy is the story of Libery Jones. When she was four her father died in an oil rig accident. From that point on it was just her and her mother (and seemingly whatever boyfriend her mother had at the time). Eventually they have to move into a trailer park in Welcome, TX. And here begins our story.

Liberty has to struggle through a lot in the story. Nothing comes easy for her. She's in love with Hardy Cates (a boy who also lives in the trailer park) almost since the moment she meets him, but even though he may share her attraction, Hardy wants to leave Welcome and make something of himself. Liberty doesn't begrudge him of this, she would do anything to have a better life as well, but it still hurts.

After the death of her mother Liberty, little more than a teenager herself, now has the responsibility of taking care of her baby sister. Liberty doesn't see this as a burden, she loves her sister more than anything, but regardless, it's challenging.

Over the years Liberty works hard and eventually becomes a hair stylist in a posh Texas salon. Her life takes another turn when she meets wealthy Churchill Travis.

Being that this series is called "Travises", I was surprised at how long it actually took for a Travis to appear. This story is more Liberty's journey than anything else, but it's when Churchill Travis enters the picture that things finally begin looking up for Liberty. It's not just in a monetary way either. Churchill comes to represent a sort of father figure to Liberty which she has missed since a very young age. It is also through Churchill that she meets his oldest son Gage.

Gage, at first, doesn't like Liberty. He feels that she's just around Churchill for his money. That he is her proverbial "Sugar Daddy". Things quickly change between the two and they form a romantic realtionship. Of course that's when Hardy Cates, now a well-off oil man, comes back into the picture and shows his feelings for Liberty remain the same. Now Liberty has the dilemma of choosing between her past and her future.

I felt like there was a lot of build up from when Hardy left to when Hardy would return (you had to know it was coming), but Lisa Kleypas waited a long time to for this to happen. Part of me would have liked for him to resurface sooner. I wanted to see who he had become, how his life had changed and we didn't get a lot of that in his brief return. I suppose that is understandable seeing as how Blue-Eyed Devil picks up Hardy's storyline after Sugar Daddy. Also, the fact that Sugar Daddy is Liberty's store.

I really liked Gage and Liberty together and once that happened I wished that Lisa Kleypas could have retroactively gone back and started their romance a little sooner in the story. The end just felt a bit rushed to me since we spent so much time in Liberty's childhood and her path to the Travises. Once she got to the Travises things went too quickly.

I am interested to start reading the other books in the series. If they are anything like this one, I won't want to put them down!

Also viel Spaß beim Lesen MBTM

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow build romance with an intriguing plot

4.5 stars. A really well-written, involving story with a lovely romance.

This is the first contemporary I've read by Lisa Kleypas - till recently I thought she only wrote historicals. So I was happy to try this one, and I liked it so much, now I'm going to read the others in this series.

It's the story of a character named Liberty, whom you meet when she is quite young. She has a pretty bad childhood due to some poor choices made by her mother, and also from some just plain bad luck. Whilst still a teen, Liberty meets Hardy, a hot, tough, slightly older neighbourhood boy who befriends and protects her. They become very close as they grow older and mature, but Hardy refuses to take things any further between them, even though Liberty wants to. Liberty is deeply in love with Hardy, but he plans to leave so he can make something of his life, and he doesn't want to get too involved with Liberty because he knows he has to leave her behind. But it's clear he loves her, too. And of course when he does leave, she is heartbroken.

But Liberty is made of tough stuff. She just gets on with her life and deals with things that happen to her. She is an admirable character, with real integrity and resilience. She never forgets Hardy, but she just moves on in her life.

Years pass, and Liberty eventually meets and falls in love with Gage Travis. But one day, when Liberty and Gage's relationship is still fairly new, Hardy reappears. He is now rich and successful. The connection between them is still there, and Hardy wants to take things further. So, Liberty has to decide. Gage or Hardy? The decision she makes feels like the right one to the reader, and the end of the book is very satisfying.

This book is a slow build, and it follows the details of Liberty's life very closely, especially in the early years. But it's worth sticking with it. All of the details add richness to the story and the characters. You feel like you really know and care about them, especially Liberty. My only criticism is that I would have liked the romance element in the book to be a little stronger. If so, it would have been a five star read for me. Lisa Kleypas is clearly a quality writer, and I'm now keen to seek out the other books in this series.

So I started out this series on the third book. I really liked Smooth talking Stranger. I liked this book as well… but it did feel a little slow and a bit tedious at times. I loved Liberty. She is kind and smart and devoted to the ones she loves.

SUGAR DADDY is the first of the Travis Family series. It is the story of Liberty Jones, a poor girl from a small town. She meets Hardy Cates, the love of her childhood, who leaves her to make something of himself. Liberty is left with her baby sister to raise and a life to build for herself. She moves to Houston where she meets Gage Travis. Just when she begins a relationship with him, Hardy returns to her life. Liberty is torn between two men.

overall, I enjoyed this book. It was very slow in the beginning, starting when Liberty is fourteen years old. In fact, she doesn't meet the ultimate hero of the book, Gage until half the book is over. While I was happy with the resolution of the story, Hardy seems to be better drawn as a character. The first time I read the book, I couldn't help but feel that Liberty had chosen the wrong man. Having read the other books in the series now, I was happy to have Hardy get a happy ending as well. Thus, I feel that this book is better because of the series. Also, this book is written in the first person, which was difficult for me to respond to the first time I read it. Having read the others in the series, I have gotten used to the first person narrative.

This is my least favorite book in the series, but is much better with the other books. I'd rate this a 3.75.

Sugar Daddy by Lisa Kleypas (Audio Edition)

The Travises #1

4.5 Stars

I really enjoyed this book. Had life not gotten in the way so much, I would have finished it sooner! I did not read the synopsis before starting this book, so I didn't have any real expectations, other than a few good reviews (which I only glance at as I hate spoilers.)

In the beginning I had started to wonder if it was a YA novel, as by chapter 5 the leads were still sophomores in high school. Liberty was a strong leading lady. Her persistence and caring for her sister were admirable.

I thought Hardy and Liberty together were great, and as things started to happen and change in the story, I kept waiting for him to show up in the book more. Until Gage entered the picture that is. The chemistry between these two' whoa! It was awesome. Then Hardy shows up. Oy! Talk about a hard decision!

While I wish there was a bit more romance in this story, what was there was well written. Most of the book is spent reliving Liberty's story (from her point of view), and all the trials and such that comes along with being a guardian of a young child, at a young age, while not having access to a lot of money. Don't misunderstand, this is not a bad thing. It kept me listening and I never found myself feeling bored. I will definitely read the next book the series.

Jeannie Stith did a good job with the narration, her southern accents were great and brought me into Texas. I would listen to a book she read again.

Before getting the book I read some of the reviews. Some good and bad. Thing is I realized that it’s more probable for me to write a review if I like an author but I’m disappointed at the specific book.If I like the author I go in with higher expectations. I have books in three different reading platforms and some books I know they are not going to be great, they are just fillers until a good author publishes a book. I don’t bother writing reviews. No expectations.
Basically, sometimes the bad review is more due to disliking the story instead of disliking the author. It’s just hard to differentiate. I think that’s the case with this book.
This author can write very well. And the story is interesting enough that keeps you reading and invested in the characters. Problem with this specific story is that Ms Keyplass introduce a H, makes you feel for him then switch the story to a new one that shows up past the half point of the book. Of course some people got furious. To make matters worse the original H end up looking quite bad and that feels out of character.
Past that, it’s a good book.
