The plot is laid out extremely well.. all fitting in together at the end. Looking forward to more of Q and definitely Assad.

2.0 out of 5 starsDetective Stories are not novels by Dostoevsky
Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on 4 July 2022
When authors begin to imagine themselves as Dostoevsky or Charles Dickens but fails to deliver that quality of literary work, Mercy happens. It is tedious, very unrealistic and at times lengthy to read. It continues to create characters and sub-plots unnecessarily.

This is the first time that I am reading this book by the author and frankly speaking was totally bowled by the entire plot. The writing, the cliffhangers, the mysteries and the backstories are simply the best. Definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a detective novel with a feel of the real world stories

I liked Carl's character a lot. Shades of grey is quite realistic for a detective today and unlike other books where they are projected as superheroes!

No match to Henning mankell or Jo nesbo. The plot is too simplistic n various other things added to make a plot. All in all not worth the hype.

Ms. M. Glover
3.0 out of 5 stars Odd translation
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 4 May 2023

From our bookclub discussion: "Although the translation was odd and didn't flow very well, it certainly ticked the boxes of Nordic Noir (grizzly murder/potential murder, cold cases, dysfunctional police detective etc). Only one of us has seen this on the tv but from the sounds of it, these books make better tv programmes than reading. We did like the scenes with Merete (no matter how grim they were) but the current timeline was a bit muddled. Assad was a nice quirky side-kick to Carl and managed to lighten the mood somewhat."
