It is an interesting take on Snow White’s tale, focused on the Evil Queen and bearing Disney’s approval. It is a sad tale of a young woman who falls in love, but can’t believe in her own beauty, slowly spiraling to madness and becoming a victim of her own envy. The story of the Queen is something out of Andrew Lang’s fairy books, and like the tales of old, you shouldn’t expect happiness. Even the story was written for a younger audience, that does little to diminish its tragic tone.
Super fun to read a classic story from the point of the view of the villain. This book mostly focuses on the years prior to the actual Snow White story, with the last 15-20% of the book covering the events of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. I believe these books are Disney approved, and this one mostly stayed true to the film, with the addition of three witch sisters, who seem to be controlling the major events of the story. I enjoyed the sisters, and read a preview of the next book in this series, which is from the Beast's point of view (Beauty and the Beast). The three witches appear to be in that story as well. I chuckled thinking of someone reading this book who for some reason had never read/seen Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and how bizarre this story would seem to them. Snow White's in a cottage with seven little men!? And she's talking to animals? My favorite part of this book was finding out the identity of the face in the magic mirror. What a great twist!
LOVED the story. However I had to take away 1 Star for the cover. I ordered all of the books in the series and EVERY SINGLE BOOK had gross greasy finger prints all over the covers! Not a huge deal to me since I always remove them anyway and turn them into book marks. But if you like to keep them order from somewhere else! For the amount paid for all of them they should have been in brand new condition.
I am a Disney Nerd so when I found out about this series through TikTok I immediately ordered the first book (i didn’t want to order all three just in case I wasn’t a fan). I was super excited for the book to come, the shipment was delayed so I started reading a little bit of it through Google preview and I immediately fell in love! Just by reading the first few pages I was intrigued and began reading as soon as the book came! It only took me two days to read the book! I haven’t read in a while because no book has made me excited or happy to read, but this book definitely brought my love of reading back! It only gets a 4/5 because on the cover there was some weird greasy stuff that I had to clean off.
This was a lot of fun. The villains backstory is rarely told and this fits perfectly. Learning how the queen devolved into what she was in the movie is interesting. I’m a big classic Disney lover and the queen was always my favorite villain. It’s about 250 pages but it goes very fast. Finished it in two sittings.
Had a teeny weenie piece of heart after all.. wonder who Maleficent is? I started reading Ursula’s book since The Little Mermaid was my favorite movie but got confused so started at beginning with Snow White!
