Just an awful book. I was expecting to read a piece that would nicely guide me through the history (or at least the most widely accepted history) of religion, and somehow end up with a decent idea of how the larger systems of religion came to be. Extremely disappointed. The items that the author chose to speak about in this piece were incredibly boring and were of little interest to me, and probably to most readers.
My biggest bone to pick is the author's clear bias concerning Christianity. He actually writes "we" when discussing Christians, as if everyone reading the book is a Christian. Here a few quotes that made me stop reading this altogether (I had read about 20% of the book when I spotted these in the last chapter):
"views are offered regarding [Christianity's] essential nature, which the writer believes to be so firmly founded in fact that even those who are not Christians cannot deny them..."
"in maintaining Christianity as at first preached....lies the hope of the future of mankind"
Nevermind these quotes, the worst is when he talks about the religions of China, which he claims are underdeveloped before dismissing them altogether.
Don't bother with this book. A complete waste of time.
It comes as a bit of a shock to realize that this book was written and first published more than 100 years ago. It then becomes more interesting as a snapshot of the prevailing attitudes in religious history, pluralism and even Christian theology held at the time. I was looking for something that would summarize what I have studied for the last twenty years. It's not what I wanted, but I'm grateful I found it.
