This arrived yesterday and I can't wait to experiment. I have a number of Ina Garten's books and they sit happily on my shelves next to Elizabeth David and Jane Grigson. Although she is a different kind of cookery writer I do feel she stands well with them.
IG is not, as a reviewer of one of her other books said on Amazon, a writer for the "inexperienced cook". She's a writer for every cook regardless of experience - no-one is too experienced to learn more.
OK, so she's an American writing for Americans but the British cook can adapt and substitute and the measurements aren't rocket science. I think you can understand these better if you are used to cooking in ounces because that's what American cups are based on but it's possible to buy proper American standard measuring cups from the E--- auction site. They are sold by a commercial catering supplier in the USA and are very reasonably priced even taking p&p into account.
Really looking forward to entertaining from this book.
I love all Ina Garten's books. Having first heard about her 8 years ago, I couldn't find her cookbooks anywhere and asked a friend to bring me one back from the US. I now have all her cookbooks and use them regularly. The recipes are fresh, easy to follow and very adaptable to the UK. Ina inspires - from her cooking, to her tips for table settings, flowers, herbs, the list goes on. I can't recommend her cookbooks enough and every recipe I have made has always worked and gone down a treat.
I adore Ina's writing. She writes as a wife and friend, offering behind the kitchen door warmth with a dose of normal kitchen mentality. She advises from the point of view of a battle weary caterer, telling you how to get jobs efficiently and with less kitchen debris. This book includes my favourite recipe for beef short ribs, which is a slow cooked staple in my house. Bloggers and commentators everywhere like to mock her use of butter and salt, but quite frankly that's lazy critique. I don't think there is abyone out there championing home cooking and classic cuisine with as much elegance as warmth as Ina Garten
I love Ina Gartens books and T.V show, she is a real inspiration and the recipes are as delicious as the photos are beautiful. Throughout the book Ina gives some great hints and tips and the recipes are easy to follow (as long as you have some American cup measures which you can get easily). i would highly recommend the Blueberry coffee cake muffins they come out perfect every time and are a firm favourite in our house! The Orange cake is also delicious. I can't wait to try out the other recipes in this lovely book.
What a wonderful cook Ina Garten is. Her presentation is fantastic and her recipes always work.I have most of her books,which I often read for the sheer joy of it and always end up selecting recipes to try!!
