5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect blend of engaging story, fascinating characters, witty dialogue and sizzling passion.

When I pick up a Loretta Chase book, I am always assured of an outstanding historical romance. This book is a perfect blend of engaging story, fascinating characters, witty dialogue and sizzling passion.

In Marcelline and Clevedon, Ms. Chase has created two vibrant and unforgettable characters.

Marcelline is one of those strong heroines that Ms. Chase excels in creating. She is clever, confident and has worked tirelessly to promote the reputation of the Maison Noirot. Her passion for what she does is unmistakable:

{What had begun as drudgery โ€“ a trade learned in childhood purely for survival โ€“ had become Marcellineโ€™s life and her love. She was not only Maison Noirotโ€™s designer but itโ€™s soul.}

However, Marcelline is not above using devious traits inherited from her Dreadful Delucey family in her efforts to become the foremost modiste in London. But, as she reveals to Clevedon, her motives are not totally mercenary because the welfare of her family is just as important to her:

{โ€œThis is how I feed and clothe and house and educate my daughter. This is how I provide for my sisters.โ€}

I think she also cares about her customers. She may manipulate them and want their money but as Clevedon points out, she gives totally of herself to make them better than they think they can be. In many ways, she lacks scruples but, in her dealings with her customers, she is completely honest.

I loved watching Clevedon slowly grow into the mantle of hero. When Marcelline accuses him of frittering his life away, he feels shame and is forced to take good look at himself for the first time. When he starts to take an interest in Marcellineโ€™s business, he discovers a real purpose to his life. He also realises how talented and honourable Marcelline is in her business dealings. I also love how he cares for Marcelline when she is seasick on the return journey to London; how he risks his life to save her daughter, Lucie; how he comes to the aid of the sisters when disaster strikes the Maison Noirot, regardless of societyโ€™s censure.

The chemistry between Marcelline and Clevedon is fantastic! From their first meeting, I could feel the emotionally charged atmosphere between them and it is obvious that, whatever obstacles stand in their way, they are meant to be together. Ms. Chase is brilliant at conveying the sexual tension in the scenes between Marcelline and Clevedon with smart and witty dialogue and wonderfully descriptive writing:

{She moved his hands away, hers lightly brushing his. Glove against glove, that was all. Yet she felt the shock of contact as though skin had touched skin, and the sensation traveled the length of her body.}

Ms. Chase keeps the tension building and with all this passion bubbling under the surface, it is obvious that, when they finally surrender to it, their love scene will be explosive! The author certainly doesnโ€™t disappoint, capturing all the urgency and emotion in their lovemaking:

{He gave in to it, too, in a mad, hungry kiss, while his hands moved greedily over her, wanting and wanting, endlessly wanting.}

I like how Ms. Chase doesnโ€™t make all the problems they will have to face in their future together disappear but still manages to end on an optimistic note. The epilogue is just the icing on the cake.

Ms. Chase provides enough detail with regard the secondary characters to make them interesting in their own right. Marcellineโ€™s sisters, Sophia and Leonie, bring their own talents to the running of the Maison Noirot and I canโ€™t wait to read their stories. I loved the warm-hearted Lady Clara and was so glad when she told Clevedon that she deserved {to be loved, truly loved โ€“ mind, body and soul.} I hope she gets her own story with a hero worthy of her. Finally, I have to mention Marcellineโ€™s daughter, Lucie (or Erroll as she prefers to be called). She is a miniature version of her mother with all her manipulative wiles but I couldnโ€™t help but adore her, especially the way in which she wraps Clevedon around her little finger.

VERDICT: SUPERB, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

RATING: 5/5 STARS

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting historical romance!

This was definitely a story to sink my teeth into! Despite some minor hiccups I enjoyed it immensely. It was rich in language, events, scenery, people and intrigue. Marcelline and Gervase perfectly matched each other in passion, intellect and tenacity. Who could have thought that the world of fashion would be so exciting and dangerous?! It was really fascinating to observe the Noirot sisters bring Beau Monde to their knees with their beautiful dresses and cunning maneuvers.

Marcelline, the eldest Noirot, is the pillar that holds the family together. She is passionate and tempestuous, and she will not let anyone stand in her way. I loved her brilliant mind, her sharp tongue and her integrity. She fought so hard to not fall for Clevedon, but they were just like magnets attracted to each other. They couldn't help themselves.

Gervase, the Duke of Clevedon, was the epitome of an aristocrat of his time - arrogant, intelligent and selfish yet caring at the same time. He seemed a bit clueless in his feelings about two women in his life - Noirot who brought out basic instincts of passion and craving, and Clara who brought out gentleness and protectiveness. He is the kind of character you dislike at first but then start to see there is more beneath the surface.

Despite many saying that one of the women in the story lost, I would disagree. I think that both Clara and Marcelline were right where they wanted to be. Clara, Clevedon's intended, while being bland for the most part of the story, found herself in the end and was simply magnificent.

I enjoyed the steady pace of the book. The suspense that came at times from rivalry and betrayal, the passionate encounters that were absolutely beautifully written, the conflicted characters that rose above circumstances and expectations and the witty banter and charming humor marked this book as outstanding historical romance for me. I am very happy with how and whom the characters of the book ended up with. Lavish historical romance! I highly recommend it!

Marcelline Noirot and her sisters own a dress shop in London. Marcelline is a gifted designer, knowing how to underscore the beauty of the lady wearing her creation. Her business is her passion, but also financially securing her daughters and her sister lives. Each of the 3 sisters has a personal strength, the combination making them eventually the best dress makers in London. But in order to get the ton's attention they need some big clients. When they hear that the Duke of Clevedon may finally return from Paris and get married to his long time friend and promised Clara, they immediately agree that they need to get the future duchess as a client. Marcelline therefore decides not to court the Ladies attention but the Dukes and travels therefore to Paris.

Marcellines arrival in Paris with her breathtaking gowns, her self-assurance, her vibrant personality attracts Clevelands attention, first trough her amazing beauty, which she controls thanks to her "superior taste" by making her the focus of all attentions or disappear in the crowed if chosen, then by her intriguing character. Due to her background she behaves like a lady, but she also gambles, is unbelievingly honest about her prime interest in the duke- his bride to be- and does everything with a nearly unlimited passion.

And then suddenly the game becomes too dangerous for her because Clevedon decides to seduce her and she starts falling for him. So she runs away, back to London. He follows her stands by her, finally introduces Clara to her as a future customer only to be close to her. Slowly their mutual attraction becomes overwhelming. Marcellines daughter also catches Clevedons heart.... But she is only a shopkeeper, he is a duke, they both risk their reputation and their future being together... reason vs. love.

This is one of my favourite books. Mrs Chase knows how to create fascinating deep characters caught in an interesting plot. I got caught in a fast story with characters swirling around, fascinating dialogues and a lot of events as you read. This is not the boring does he/she love me story, filled with misunderstanding and unspoken feelings that I got so bored of in other romances. Here you get caught, you smile, you laugh, you hold your breath, you understand the fears, the doubts, the hopes and the dreams of all characters and their lively dialogues. "And so, of course, he lost the battle, that feeble battle with Honor and Kindness and Respect and all the other noble qualities Warford had tried to drum into him." (p. 275)

Definitely a keeper!

I am very curious about the next book of the Dressmaker series...

I hope you will enjoy the read as much as I did MBTM

I have a slowly flourishing love affair with Loretta Chase's novels. The first one I read was Lord Perfect. I thought it was okay, but I didn't love it. It didn't quite make it to the Keeper's Shelf. However, repeated recommendations brought me back to her and I'm so glad they did. I gobbled up Mr Impossible, the Last Hellion and Lord of Scoundrel's and I realised that Chase is an author who does comedy, exquisite detail, wit and romance.

When I saw the plot for Silk is for Seduction I was intrigued. Anyone who loves historical romance has a soft spot for the dresses. Who wouldn't? It was a great period for dresses. And knowing Chase's passion for exquisitely placed historical detail I knew it was going to be good.

And it is.

In my opinion Chase has excelled herself with this novel and taken a leap beyond even her excellence in Mr Impossible etc. Marcelline, our fiercely determined and quick-witted heroine, keeps the hero on the back foot from the get go. Chemistry and tension sizzle throughout every page and the secondary characters are hilarious and beautifully imagined. It does take some wild leaps of fancy (a modiste setting up shop in a Duke's house) but such bouts of outlandishness is acknowledged and frankly, it is a novel. Twists, turns and unexpected events are what it's all about - so long as they are backed up with real romance. And in this book, they are.

And the dresses are beautifully imagined. I found myself standing in the shoes of the haut monde that crowded Marcelline's shop. Damn it, I wanted to see that dress too!

But it doesn't detract from the romance one bit. It would have been so easy to make Marcelline a cinderella character being rescued by the Duke. In fact, she is as hard as nails (in a graceful, witty and warm-hearted ways) and holds her own every step of the way. They are a perfect match and it's an enormously satisfying book.

Up there as one of my top two historical romances of 2011, along with Joanna Bourne's Black Hawk - a very different, but equally wonderful novel.

When I picked this up, I was looking for a light and fluffy book of historical fiction to use as a palate cleanser between more meaty books. That was not what I got! This story was wonderful. It was filled with intense emotion. It was also a very good look at what a rigid class structure is like.

Marcelline is in trade. While she has aristocratic ancestry, they were not the upstanding, honorable type of aristocrats. They were the black sheep of their families. She has been raised without moral code or scruples and is an excellent forger, liar, and actress. She is also a brilliant dress designer. When her parents, beloved cousin and husband die of cholera she travels to London with her two younger sisters and her daughter to make a life for herself and them. To be successful they need to attract aristocratic clients to their dress shop.

Marcelline travels to France to win the interest of the Duke of Clevedon so that he will have his intended bride buy her clothing from Marcelline's shop. Her intentions are purely mercenary as she sets out to fascinate and intrigue him. She isn't at all expecting to be fascinated and intrigued herself but Clevedon is more than she expects.

Clevedon is a typical historical romance hero. He is handsome, arrogant, spoiled and bored. But he is also intelligent and damaged by an unfortunate childhood.

These two people should never have met. They should never have fallen in love. Both will have to overcome major obstacles in order to be together. This story talks about the very real problems that come when a person marries outside of their class. The heroine states them very clearly. The hero manages to find a compromise.

This was an intense read with strong characters and an interesting story. The story is lightened by the antics of Marcelline's daughter Lucie who is a very charming and willful six-year-old who manages to wrap everyone around her fingers.

I recommend this one to lovers of historical romances. It was great!

Every once in a great while you read a book that just lures you into another world โ€“ and this book did it for me. It had all the elements I most enjoy โ€“ great characterization with a saucy, spirited, independent heroine and a duke that was, naturally, tall, dark and handsome, an absorbing plot, witty, intelligent dialogue and absolutely delightful descriptive prose. I really, REALLY enjoyed this book.

The two protagonists spoke bluntly and pulled no punches โ€“ and it was a joy to see them banter. She told him right up front that her goal was to plunder his purse, and he reciprocated by telling her how provoking, annoying and aggravating she was โ€“ and how glad heโ€™d be to see the last of her. Or, would he??? Their flirtation is tantalizing, and their budding relationship is SO satisfying to follow.

If there is one thing in a novel that I ordinarily hate, it is the introduction of children into the mix. Most children as a plot device are annoying distractions, usually too precocious to be believable. The child in this book, however, is a treat. Sheโ€™s 6 years old, exquisitely dressed with an innocent charm thatโ€™s endearing. The scene where she and the duke first encounter one another is priceless! She, pretending to be a princess, is awed by his ducal presence โ€“ she thinks heโ€™s a king. Sheโ€™s even more awed by his crested carriage and yearns for a ride, in a charming show of sweet manners. The duke, being unused to children and uncomfortable around them, is also shocked that the woman he is attracted to even HAS a daughter, so his response to Lucie is a surprise to himself. She absolutely melts his heart โ€“ and mine melted at the same instant. From that point on, Lucie and the duke Clevedon have a mutual admiration pact and the plot revolves on their lovely friendship.

There are so many enjoyable, romantic turns in this book that the biggest favor I could do at this point is to stop writing and simply recommend you read this book for yourself. I totally loved it. Totally.

I've been a major book slump recently but thankfully this pulled me out of it! I love books with banter, lots of dialogue, and not pages of unnecessary inner thoughts, and this fits the bill. The story is sort of unique, in that a dressmaker is out to win a future duchess's patronage by pursuing the duke. A lot went on in a short time, but I never felt it was rushed. Everything was addressed (character-wise), and their personalities balanced each other. Can't wait to read the rest of this series and explore other LC books!

SILK IS FOR SEDUCTION is the first book in the Dressmakers Series. The series is about three sisters who own a dress shop in London. This book is about the oldest sister Marcelline Noirot. When the sisters hear that the Duke of Clevedon is finally to return from the Continent to marry his longtime intended, the sisters are determined to get the Duchess to be as a client. Marcelline goes to Paris to work on getting the attention of the Duke in order to make a business proposition. Instead the sparks fly between the two. Marcelline worries about her attraction to the Duke destroying her family's business.

I loved the story between Clevedon and Marcelline. This book takes seriously the class divisions that separate the two. There is no ignoring the damage that a relationship between the two could cause. The book is deeply emotional as both find something special with the other but other things keep them apart. For people who claim to have few scruples, the two worry very much about hurting other people.

The scene where Marcelline says goodbye was incredibly heartbreaking because neither wants to say it. I also really loved Clevedon's relationship with Marcelline's daughter. His love for her is quite obvious. I also really liked the relationship between the sisters and all the information about damaging of the period. This book is precisely set in its time and place.

I'd rate this one a 4.25.

Marcelline is a modiste, and she wants the Duke of Clevedon to allow her to dress his soon-to-be fiance. So follows a game of cat and mouse, where these two stalk and try to outwit and out-seduce each other.

If you read historical romances and your favourite bits are the inevitable: beautiful, stupid virgin heroine; perfect, moral 'rake' hero; the bit where the heroine gets kidnapped by the villain; and the unequivocal HEA; then I admit that Silk is for Seduction is possibly not for you.

If however, you like the characters to be human, heroines to hold their own, and heroes that act in a manner which isn't perfect, you will love this book.

There is a good amount of historical detail in the dresses, which for me didn't detract from the story - quite the opposite. And I liked the fact that unlike most romances, there was a genuine conflict between the characters, both emotional and social (not 'created' conflict by misunderstandings). She's a shop keeper and no one ever pretends that this isn't an issue and that the whole thing isn't a scandal. The other characters are great. Proper, fleshed out people with personalities. Clara, the 'other woman' is lovely, and frankly is far too nice for Clevedon, although don't worry, she has a back bone. I can't wait to see how Sophy gets on with Fox, or maybe Longmore...
