Like other novellas, the characters never get well fleshed out, nevertheless good quick read. There are typos here and there. It has 1 sex scene which ideally wasn't required at all. Overall time pass read

4.0 out of 5 stars Never Judge a Book by its Cover

What a delightful little novella. This is the third book I've read by this author--although it's the first novella. The first two books were  McAlistair's Fortune  and  Tempting Fate , both of which I thoroughly enjoyed. This novella was just as enjoyable. Ms. Johnson's superior talent for weaving a story shines through in this endeavor. It's a story about a super organized, disciplined, and regimented hero and his delightfully unpredictable lady love. The characters of Patience and William are so artfully created that they seemed to come alive within the pages of the book!

William Renwick, the second son of a second son, had no plans to inherit his family's earldom...and William, an ex-military man, usually has a plan for EVERYTHING! LOL Now that he is the new Earl of Casslebury, William is determined to do his duty by his title and sire himself an heir. In order to do that, of course, he must first find himself a wife. William has set his sights on one Miss Caroline Meldrin, who seems to fulfill all his requirements. Foremost on William's list is a lady who will bring laughter and light into his otherwise staid and regimented existence. In William's estimation, Ms. Meldrin fulfills all his requirements and then some, while her close friend and confident, Ms. Patience Byerly, does not.

William's initial impression of Patience is that she is a somewhat severe looking creature, who is demure, rather plain, and disapproving. She also seems remarkably efficient, and the last thing William needs in his life, is more efficiency. LOL All this changes when William inadvertently witnesses Patience performing a most outlandish and remarkable feat; one which forced him to reconsider his first impression of Patience. For as the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover.

William is so fascinated by what he saw that he finds his plan going off course when he begins to spend time with Patience, instead of his matrimonial target. Very quickly, William realizes that Patience is not at all what he thought. Instead she is outgoing, bubbly, warm, full of laughter, and has a wonderful zest for life. William finds himself captivated by Patience and very quickly his plan to court Caroline is supplanted by a new plan to court Patience.

However, as William will soon discover to his utter frustration, any plan involving Patience, must make allowances for unpredictable occurrences. LOL But, even while he is utterly bewildered by the Patience's chaotic existence, he is completely charmed by her. However, before the couple can achieve their HEA, Patience must trust William with the truth of her father's condition; a condition which she is sure will be the doom of her hopes for a happy future.

The story that unfolds is sweet, and romantic, and has lot of instances of gentle humor. I must say that one thing I have noticed about Ms. Johnson's writing, and that is that she is a master at employing humor in her romance novels. This is a wonderful story and one that I highly recommend. FYI, I would say that this is technically a clean romance. There is one love scene, but no explicit details are given--they are merely hinted at--and no crude language is used. Happy reading!

4.0 out of 5 stars A delightful read even when it isn't Christmas.

This was a novella recommendation from Nalini Singh's blog. It sounded so cozy it seemed a perfect read for what has turned out to be the dreariest day so far this year.

William Renwick, Earl of Casslebury sets out to find a wife with his usual military precision, but the quarry in question manages to continually elude him. Right when he thinks he has her cornered, he finds out her companion has some unusual proclivities. No, it's not dirty, but it is one of the most humorous and novel openings to a story that I have had the pleasure to read. I simply adore a military man with a sly sense of humor who only thinks he knows what he wants. Patience is a plain woman, of limited means, advanced age for her time period, and even more dismal family lines. Not at all the sort of woman an earl would choose. Fortunately our intrepid hero doesn't continue to pursue the wrong woman out of stubbornness, and in relatively short order a lovely sort of silly and romantic relationship blooms. Of course it had to bloom in short order, this is a novella, which means that there are very few conflicts than can be capably handled, and in this case it was the BIG SECRET. It isn't my favorite trope, but with the secret in question, I can understand why it was kept.

A Christmas Dance was an altogether lovely novella that brightened my dreary day right up.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun holiday story (though has an abrupt ending)

A Christmas Dance was my first taste of Alissa Johnson's work. While the ending left me disappointed due to its abruptness, I really enjoyed the rest of the story and will be trying other works by this author.

Patience has a secret that has prevented her from making a match. William is a staid earl who loves to maintain an organized life. He has picked out a wife, but after seeing Patience do something entirely unexpected, he is intrigued. For the rest of the short story, he pursues her and they slowly fall for each other. Overall, it is sweet and charming and perfect for the holidays.

I read this story and was really enjoying the dialogue, but then the ending came out of NOWHERE and there were many threads, particularly with Patience's family, that were not resolved and left me wondering if the HEA was really assured.

With this quibble, I'd still recommend it for anyone curious about the author because of its cheap price and fun spirit. Just be prepared for a quick sex scene and even quicker ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nearly perfect Christmas read

Light reading for a Christmas season. I always like a few--this is my preferred Hallmark Holiday method. The length of the main story was just about spot on--a nice time relaxing in the glow of holiday lights with a cup of tea or glass of wine. All it needed for me in addition to what it provided was an epilogue--perhaps a Christmas or two into the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars This one's a charmer

What a treat to read a story about likable people. This is a novella, so it's a fast read but there's plenty of time to get to know the hero and the heroine and to actually care about what happens to them. I thought I was reading a sweet romance because there were no rakes or high strung beauties involved, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a little heat included about three quarters of the way through. The hero is a handsome, regular guy who was surprised to inherit an earldom and the heroine is a "plain," older debutante who has spent her life caring for her father, an aging man who sounds like he might have Alzheimer's disease. Of course, no one knew what that was in the early 19th Century, so he is considered mad, harmless but still shameful for the family. No, there's isn't any high adventure or desperate chase scenes, but this story doesn't need those things. Instead, there are characters who feel real, facing real dilemmas, albeit in the trappings of the Little Season and a Regency Christmas. For me, this was a perfect, little confection for a quick read on a rainy day. It's worth an afternoon of your time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A SWEET STORY OF LEARNING WHAT YOU TRULY WANT IN LIFE

Sometime we think we know what we want, but we can be mistaken.

William needs a wife and being a very organized person, he has a plan to woo Caroline. But, then he gets a new perspective on her companion, Patience. His world changes.

Patience is perfect for him. She makes him laugh. She is spontaneous. She is intelligent. She has a sense of humor. None of these qualities are what he thought he wanted, but all of them are qualities he needs in a wife.

This is a charming short novella. The dialog is fun, the plot has a little bit of angst and all in all it is time spent with some really nice people.

Both Patience and William are terrific characters. I wanted both of them to be rewarded
by a Happily Ever After.

What a delightful surprise! I bought this novella on impulse, then inhaled it like a cream puff. Now I'm actively seeking other eBooks by Ms Johnson.

As Mizgamer stated in her review, this really is a short, sweet read. It involves a charming, down-to-earth former soldier who has become earl by chance. Though he intends to court a certain young lady, he finds himself drawn instead to her near-sighted friend, captivated by her intelligent conversation and sparkling green eyes. The romance evolves naturally, and I'm happy to say that no hearts were broken, no feelings manipulated, and no backs stabbed in the making of this novella.

If you're in the mood for desperate deeds and foul betrayals, this story won't satisfy you, but if you're craving a quiet evening with a sweet cream puff, it should do the trick.
