3.0 out of 5 stars Brrrrrrrrr...
Reviewed in the United States on 30 November 2015
What it's all about...

This is a SF/Fantasy/Dystopian icy cold book! For heaven's sake it takes place in Antarctica where everyone lives under a dome! If the dome breaks...and that's weirdly kind of happening at times...these inhabitants are in big freezing cold trouble. In addition to a freezing cold climate and life in a bubble...there are bad guys, gangsters, very weird robots with secrets and drones! People run out of supplies and yearn to get to the Mainland. This book exudes cold freezing temps...I had to sweater up while I was reading it.

Why I wanted to read it...

Eliana is a PI...involved with a bad guy...Diego who works for the biggest mobster under the dome. Enter Marianella Luna...don't you just love that name...who hires Eliana to find her secret "hush hush" missing documents. Sofia is another human looking robot who has her own set of secret evil plans that mostly involve getting rid of the big mobster. Pretty much everyone wants the big mobster gone...but this one person in particular wants to wring the mobster's neck...literally.

What made me truly enjoy this book...

This book was really chilling...heeheehee...everything that happens happens in a frigid atmosphere. Robots and people working together and then trying to kill each other...the pace of this book was fast. I actually liked the robot storyline much more than the human storyline. Not a fan of the humans in this book.

Why you should read it, too...

If you like this genre...and you are in the mood for something a little different...this might be a good one to try!

4.0 out of 5 stars Humans, robots follow different agendas to their own ideas of freedom
Reviewed in the United States on 10 November 2015
Eliana is the only female private investigator in the domed Hope City, Antarctica. She's good at her job, and she hopes to earn enough for a ticket out of the dome and into the mainland, even if that means leaving her boyfriend, Diego, who's an errand runner for Ignacio Cabrera, the city's crime boss. When Lady Luna, a beautiful and wealthy aristocrat, comes to Eliana with an unusual assignment, earning a big chunk of money toward her escape is the biggest motivator for Eliana to accept the job, which turns out to be more dangerous than she imagined.

While Eliana completes her mission for Lady Luna (who prefers to be called Marianella), a friendship develops between the two women. Eliana learns secrets about Marianella she must decide whether she can keep; meanwhile, Marianella is trying to unravel a mystery involving her dangerous friend, Sofia, and what exactly she's doing in the abandoned amusement park with maintenance drones, and robots such as android Luciano, who's been programmed to help people but still manages to think for himself and go against orders from time to time.

Elaina's life crumbles when she discovers Diego's betrayal; but can she still save his life? The book moves along at a smooth, interesting pace. Each character mostly has a distinct personality, with an interesting blend or balance between good and evil. However, Cabrera is not deeply drawn and feels like a somewhat dull, stereotypical villain. Although the action is fairly original and fast-paced, some of the reactions were repeated so many times they became monotonous and lost their appeal. Overall, it felt like a good effort to tell an unusual story about what it means to be human in a world where those humans who appear to be friends may not be, and where robots might have more in their programs than blindly following humankind's orders. The big question is, as the humans and robots each work toward their own different ideas of freedom and success, is there a way for them to work together, or are they ultimately rivals?

4.0 out of 5 stars Private Investigator meets Blade Runner-Lite
Reviewed in the United States on 23 November 2015
I think, before you pick this book up, you might want to be clear on the genre.

This is basically a PI novel with a tiny tinge of crime and the thinnest SF (think Blade Runner-lite + romantic angst). The Antarctic Setting - which is what made we want to read the novel - isn't that important. It really could have been set in any alt-history location. The only time it's used to any advantage is in an attempted murder scene. Other than that, you could be anywhere USA.

But as a PI/Crime novel, it does work. You've got some pretty good characters, a crime that is convoluted enough to make you wonder, but not so convoluted that it gets silly, and you've got the basic feeling of an old time PI novel.

There is an undercurrent of philosophy dealing with what is and is not human. At first you sort of think it's clear cut - until you realize that one person you should be rooting for is kind of...well, not evil. Just stone cold.

All in all, I enjoyed this book. I would like a little more grittiness, a little more actual SF, and a lot more Antarctica having anything to do with anything, but I did kind of dig this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars “Cool” Alternate History
Reviewed in the United States on 7 November 2015
In an alternate 20th century, steam power and atomic power are used. And they power robots, androids, and computers. The domed city of Hope in Antarctica supplies atomic power to Argentina. Maintenance robots maintain the atomic power plants and the dome. But the human inhabitants depend on the city maintaining the light and heat, and there are food shortages during the winter when few supply ships can bring in supplies. They cannot emigrate to the mainland without enough money to buy a very expensive visa and passage on a ship.

Eliana Gomez is a private detective who takes on risky cases trying to earn enough money to buy a visa. Ignacio Cabrera is a gangster who has half the police and half the city workers on his payroll and may have put people who cross him “outside the dome.” Lady Luna is an aristocrat who must prevent Cabrera from getting incriminating documents about her, but what is her secret? There are rumors that some illegal robots are hiding in a large an abandoned amusement park. Other rumors suggest some of the robots might be sentient. And why are there power interruptions that threaten the vital heat?

To enjoy this book the reader will have to accept the technological assumptions of this alternative universe. Once he does, the plot begins slowly but gradually to become more complicated. Three interesting female characters dominate the story: Eliana, Lady Luna, and the mysterious Sofia who does work for Cabrera to obtain some mysterious equipment from Brazil. And the obvious dangers may be hiding even deeper dangers.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read
Reviewed in the United States on 28 November 2015
I have not read anything by this author before. Instantly I was transported to Hope City. I got a clear picture of what the city looked like and could feel the icy, cold of the Artic. I think I would go out of my mind living in a place like Hope City during the long winter months. One I don't like winter and two having to ration my supplies all winter and worry that if the power went out how long would it be before everything started to freeze, is not my idea of a good life.

Right from the beginning I connected with Eliana and her boyfriend, Diego. They are a good couple but at the same time they could be like fire and ice. Marianella and Sofia are another story altogether. It did take me a while to slowly build up to them. In fact for the first third of the story, it was a blur what I read about them. It really was not until Marianella's secret was revealed and this happened later in the story that I than became intrigued by her and Sofia.

As I was reading the story, however it did feel like there were two sides of the story...Eliana and Diego and Marianella and Sofia. Yet the second half of the story was stronger and where I felt that all four of these characters stories came together and became one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Antarctica Noir
Reviewed in the United States on 19 December 2015
A delightfully chilling gem of Antarctica noir! From the first to the last page this book is full of fabulous descriptive wordbuilding coupled with high-stakes conflict and flawed complex characters. What seemingly starts out as a simple mystery is tinged with dangerously increasing electric outages, twists and turns with conflicting goals in a convoluted power struggle. The themes of trust and loyalty - or the lack of is craftily plotted into the storyline as the diverse cast of characters becomes intertwined with each other. And it becomes more intriguing as the characters are both human and android and their intimate self-discoveries and goals add to the discord. A nice twist for me is the alluring female characters being front and center in the major conflicts in the book. This was an all-night read for me as I was kept on the edge of my seat trying to predict outcomes. I hope visit with these captivating characters and gripping world again soon.
