I have known Gregg Kreutz for well over 20 years. This book reflects his approach to oil painting, as found in another great book by the same author, "Problem Solving for Oil Painters" which became available in 1997. This current book, an edition from 2016 follows the former but instead, covers all main classic oil painting subjects: Portrait, Figure, Still Life and Landscape.
It is not a basic tutorial, teaching how to paint in oils, and I suspect the author assumes the reader already knows the basics of oil painting technique, how to use materials and the meaning of techniques such as "scumbling", "glazing", "dry-brush", etc.
He offers perfectly sound and knowledgeable advice, as you would expect from a top notch teacher at the ART STUDENTS LEAGUE OF NEW YORK. And perhaps not unexpectedly, his advice is based on his experience and style of painting. Personally I love his oil painting style and characteristics, which is somewhat loose, expressive and as we oil painters often call it... "Painterly".
For those oil painters out there, into this painterly, expressive, a little loose brushwork style, I highly recommend Gregg Kreutz book in this review as well as the other "Problem Solving..." book. But I also recommend very highly another book which compliments Gregg Kreutz work perfectly: "Oil Painting Secrets From a Master", by David A. Leffel. They all offer priceless teaching and invaluable advice.
Very informative and instructive - but not in the usual format of 'how to' painting books. I know I will keep coming back again and again to this book as I develop my oil painting techniques. Thank you
